ask him if the scope is long or compact tube length.
if it is a compact tube Leupold hell have to buy a 1-piece rail and use weaver mounts or hes not going to be able to move the scope far enough back to get proper eye relief. the Savage receiver is about 1/2" longer than a comparable Remmy and on a long action this will be a problem. best place to get a rail would be Brownells.
if its a long tube scope hell be able to get away with 2-piece bases.

if hes going through the trouble of replacing the rings & scope he may as well replace the bases as well, IIRC the ones on the package guns are really crappy.
 
The bases are original two piece bases and as far as I know the scope is a standard VXII 3-9x40mm matte finish. I have a set of Millett extension rings and could mail them to him. My main concern was scope clearance. He would like the scope mounted as low as possible. The rifle is a .300WM. I didn't think extension rings would be necessary considering the original package does not use them. Would the Leupold not have enough eye relief?
 
I mounted a Rifleman on a friend's (LPR)Stevens 200 and had to scramble to get extension rings as the tube of the scope was .25" too short to fir with standard ring spacing. I don't know if the VX2 or VX3 have the same length tube but it would be worth checking before you buy. FWIW I mounted a Burris 3-9 Signature on mine and used Talley Lightweights and it worked fine, though there is only a small amount of room to move the scope fore and aft. Rick at ATRS recommended the one piece rail option for a friend that's thinking about a Savage. It's the only downside to these rifles.
