Savage 111FXCP -thoughts?

I found a pretty good deal online for one of these rifles (no accu-trigger or stock) for $495.00, free shipping. I would get either a .233Rem or .308Win.....thoughts?

it's a hunting/sporting rifle and will render factory hunting/sporting rifle accuracy. What did you want to do with it?

I find it is far better than most guns in the price range. I love mine in .308. I have been very happy with it. I am new to rifles and only shoot at 100 yards but have shot some good groups. For hunting it would be a great pick, and you can get an aftermarket trigger for 100 bucks. There is tons of threads about savages and stevens and their accuracy. You will not be dissapointed. Mine came with a Bushnell, which is pretty decent but I have seen them with some crappy simmons scopes as well. $440 at Elwood Epps.

If it doesn't have an accu-trigger it is the same as the Stevens 200. These can be had new for 350 I believe.. You can get better optics then as the package scopes have failed regularly from the ones I have seen.

I am planning to hunt with mine (if I get it in .308Win) and target shoot.....MAX would be out to 300yards, more likely 100-200yards.

the Stevens is a internal box mag where the Savage has a real mag. for the value it's a good gun. The scope is cheap & would replace it when you can afford too. over all it's good bang for your dollar.

I got one in 30-06, last time I took it to the range to sight-in, I made 3 holes that would be touching a dime placed in between them on the target at 100m.
Oh, and I did replace Simmons scope with Nikon.

Might be a good question on the hunting forum. I tend to wear my precision shooting hat when I'm in here.

The package rifles WERE around $400, feature the basic trigger (ok for hunting, not so good for target shooting as it is heavy, easily swapped out), basic plastic stock and the wonderful center feed det mag.

If I was building a rifle that I wanted a light trigger pull with AND a great det mag, I would start with the package rifle and swap in a different trigger. Pitch the scope and rings but you can certainly keep the bases.

If all I wanted was a great hunting trigger around 2.5lbs AND wanted the det mag, I would start with a Savage. Pretty much the same costs when you factor in a new trigger but the Savage's come with more alloy parts. Plus I feel the Accutrigger is one of the safest triggers I could hunt with.

Once bedded and loaded with ammo it likes, I don't see why it would not shoot sub MOA. You might get lucky and get a tackdriver too.

I think its a good rifle for the money, and a reasonable buy if you want the detachable magazine. If you don't want the detachable mag, you might be better off getting one with a wood stock as it avoids the issues of the flexible stock that comes with these package guns.
