I haven't been able to find the 300WM in stock, but the 30-06 is. I haven't come up with anything the 300 would do for me that the 30-06 wouldn't. The 30-06 would be 2" shorter too. What are you thoughts?

I asked the same thing in a hunting forum and the answers were similar. I thought there would be a lot more support for the magnum, but maybe magnum guys seem like a crowd because they usually have a lot to say.

100 yards more effective range, low barrel life and large recoil

The 300 Win Mag gives you:
  • 100yards more effective range for hunting (big plus for large game)
  • 1200 round barrel life
  • Large recoil (33% more than 30-06)
The 30-06 gives you:
  • 100yards lees effective range for hunting (not an issue for medium game)
  • 4000 round barrel life
  • Acceptable recoil (75% of that of 300 Win Mag)
The 30-06 is a much better choice for normal hunting, and I would get a 300 Win Mag only if I planned to hunt moose or elk at long range.
Personally, I recently bought a 270 WSM but would not buy a 300 WSN because of the recoil issue alone.

I picked up a 116 FCSS in 30.06 and really like it.....it has the accutrigger and accustock.... I also bought a spare mag from Savage...ouch $$$ .
I got a silver Burris fullfield 3x9x40 off the E.E and am still waiting for silver bases for it as they are on backorder now for 3 - 4 weeks .

maybe for a 1000 target rifle, but a 300 mag will be 'hunting accurate' for likely well more than 2500 rnds

X2!!
That 1200 round barrel life is shorter than one would actually get by a fair margin.
I put 2700 rounds through a 308 Norma mag before it would no longer deliver 1½ moa. [FWIW, that is close to 30 lbs of powder!] Eagleye.

116FCSS in 30-06 pre accutrigger/ Accustock made me a Savagefan. I offered to buy my son any rifle he wanted for his high school grad a few years back and he took my 116. He hasn't missed yet with it and neither did I. For sure not the prettiest guns in the world but they do what is needed of them. You wanna see something beautiful, take wifey out for a fancy meal.

If you want a 300WM then look harder and find a 300WM. The 3006 is an awesome cartridge, only slightly less good than the 308 (joke :D). But you wanted a 300WM right?

I would not worry about barrel life, for a hunting rifle with a factory barrel the point is mute.

Unless you cant go without a 300 WM, they are effective but the RECOIL, now 30.06 is the upper limit of comfy recoil and if you want 98% of the power of the 06 and accuracy and pleasure to shoot the 308 is the way to go... Cheers. JP.

make sure u get the NEW model 116FCSS with the bolt release in front of the trigger guard ..the Old model has the bolt release on top near the bolt ..i ordered a 16fcss .243in january and it still has not arrived ..i could get the OLD model right away ...

I say that if you really want a 116 in 300wm then you need to wait for it. I had to wait for 2 years to get my 116 in 338 win mag. Well worth the wait. I have a 30-06 also, good round. I have yet to shoot anything but paper with it yet.

In the end everything comes down to what you want. If you have another rifle to hunt with use it until you can get what you want. That is what I did.

There is a 3 rounds fired lnib fcss with accustock in .300 win mag in the EE last time I looked.. Came with a whole bunch of stuff for about $700

I was thinking about it but I chose to find a Savage Bear Hunter

P&D has a 111 accutrigger clip model in .338 in stock for $499, I bought one, friggin accurate. Moose beware.

except for long range competition

The 30-06 would be my choice over the 300 all day long. there are too many advantages to the 30-06. Economy and lighter recoil being the first that come to mind. And you can buy 30-06 rounds anywhere in case you get stuck on a hunting trip. just buy two boxes use some to sight back in and you are back to hunting.
