Hi guys,

Looking to see if anybody has experience with the Savage 12 BVSS or Savage 12 VLP in .308??

Basically looking for a target rifle without breaking the bank. Although it will be primarily for target shooting on the occasion to shoot Varmints.

Pretty sure in getting the .308 though just looking to see if anybody has any feed back which would be helpful to me

Cheers

I had the .223 model, and it is a great rifle, for an amazing price.

Shot MOA with factory stuff, and handloads were statrting to bring those groups down, but I sold it before doing much load development.

It is big and heavy, and well suited for bench shooting, but I wouldn't want to carry it very far!

It is a great starting point, and can easily be upgraded with trigger, and barrels that are plentiful and easy to change.

Do a forum search, type in VLP and select only posts. There is quite a bit of info here on CGN about this rifle. I have one and like it and have put up a few posts and commments about it ... In .223 however.

I have one in 22-250. Mounted a 6-18 Nikon on it. Shoots amazing groups from the bench. It weights in at just under 14lbs with a bipod and the scope. Not anything I'd like to carry very far for varmints.

Shot my 223 version in a precision match yesterday. Actually scored higher at 700 and 800 yards then I have in the past with my 308. Rifle ran like a top....the shooter had some issues....but the rifle ran great.

One nice feature with the Savage Centre feed mag system. It is easy to top of the mag in the gun like a conventional internal mag. Just feed rounds down from the top if you are just adding one or two. Faster than dropping the mag and putting it back in.

The Savage 12 is a pretty solid choice. I just started hunting with my VLP. Heavy but not too heavy.

Thanks for the info guys. What do you think about the stock on the VLP?? Does it have a wide fore end, as in enough to be very stable as a bench gun too?

Thanks again guys:)

Sounds like it's going to be the right choice for what I need from what I'm hearing here. Thanks.

Now to find someone who has one in .308 in stock. lol

So now I've done all this research it's time to find what scope to mount on it to perform best at the range and possibly those varmints.

Thanks guys, really helpful on here

:D

.308 because I already own a .204, .223 and a 22-250. Looking to go bigger bore with the long range too. Then I will have basically all the calibers I personally would need for now.

:D

With the right setup, a .223 can do anything a .308 can, with less cost and recoil for long range paper punching.

That is the theory I bought into when I sold my 308 to fund my 223. My personal match performance comparison shows that I do no worse with the 223 at least, and I spend much less on components.

It really is fun to be able to watch your splash at 500 yards through your scope because recoil is so mild.
