Looked at a few of these animals the other day in 6.5x284 wide fronts on them and a long 30 inch pipe.

Has anyone seen them perform yet or shot one.

Not a bad price and the claims are good but i would rather hear first hand info.

I Know two people that have them and neither has been overly happy with the results. Also, Complaints with the excessive length of the throat. (Typical factory issue) I will say one thing for Savage's customer service though, the vendor spoke with Savage at the SHOT show about the complaint by one owner that it shot so poorly and they have agreed to replace the rifle.

One who was having bad luck with his has since got a replacement and told me on the weekend that the new one is "Shooting real good" he got a whole new rifle plus they sent his original stock back as well since he had the adjustable butt plate put on it.

I've got to wondering how this comes about. Why would they suffer from long throats when there's a bunch of match grade reamers around that have been used successfuly for years in 6.5 x .284. David Kiff has a whole whack of them. If the throat is long to begin with and you end up chasing an already long throat that seems really weird.

These the same throats that Team Savage are using? That team seems to have pretty good success.

It does seem weird and your absolutely right. You figure they are going to buck the trend and make a chamber for a round that is almost exclusively used by hand-loaders, on a single-shot target rifle and yet they cut "factory" throats.

I'll let someone from the rank and file buy one and show me how good they are before I line up to buy one.

ah maybe they're setup for .308 caliber and that 155 palma bullet... I kinda forgot about that aspect... dunno for the Team Savage rifle's chambers?

but up top here Jason did say 6.5.284...

It's been my experience that factory throats are usually short and a compromise to cater to a varying range of bullets from varmint to hunting. They seldom accomodate VLD long range bullets.

These Savages were throated to accomodate heavy VLD LR bullets and twisted for them too. The bullets don't have to be seated on the primer. They are perfect for what they are intended for.

If people are trying to shoot light short bullets, they should have bought something else. That being said, they should shoot the light bullets fine, even if they can't touch the rifling.

If the bullet will touch the lands whilst being seated to just ahead of the neck/shoulder juncture, it is perfect. I personally feel Dave Kiff's match grade 6.5/284 reamer throat is too short for use with many of the long 139-144 grain bullets. When the throat starts burning out, I don't chase the eroding throat but set the barrel back or replace it. Regards, Bill

Not sure about manufacturers that are members or agree to be regulated by SAAMI, but manufacturers in countries that are signatories are by law obliged to chamber in accordance with CIP regulations. This goes for ammo as well.
This is why precision shooters rebarrel and chamber to their accuracy-inducing specs, plus better barrel quality. No revelations here.

I shot mine today, first time. Trigger is sharp, breaks nice. Doesn't seem to like factory Norma 140 much. 142 Sierra HPBT may have promise, to early to tell on that front yet. Comparators and such seem hard to find for it.

So for those that think Team Savage just used "off the shelf" rifles to make their win... A friend of mine who is a well-known F-Class shooter in BC, had one of these (he was about the first in BC) rifles and it shot like crap. (Leeper: It was the "De-Frippulator's namesake) Through the old-boy's network, Savage got in touch with him as a result of a complaint that was vicariously made to them at the SHOT show about the throat, and it's generally poor performance experienced by a BC F-class champion.

They made good on the complaints and sent him a whole new rifle, ostensibly "off the shelf". Well, the new rifle has a completely different throat configuration and now shoots like a house on fire. For Tom Fripp to rave about how well it shoots, it shoots damned good.

I am glad the rifle works, I am glad Savage is as committed to customer satisfaction as they are, and I am glad they are venturing into this type of rifle ESPECIALLY for its price, but it certainly makes me wonder how "Off the shelf" Team Savage's rifles really are.
