Are there any flaws/problem areas with this rifle? Aside from some saying the stock isn't super rigid. I heard something about a plastic follower, or mag well or something like that being less than desirable? Is it a well built rifle?

How is the quality control?

What about support from Savage up here in Canada? Any good?

I cannot afford anything above this model, so I am only looking for input on this rifle and lower (Stevens 200) as a recommendation for a well built, quality bolt action rifle.

Thanks!!

I've got a 12FV in 243. Aside from the crappy (but functional) stock, I can't seem to find a damn thing wrong with it. It's an easy 1/2MOA rifle if I do my part (with handloads.) Now to decide which aftermarket stock I'm going to put on it...

You should get a rifle you can be very happy with. The Savage/Stevens family of rifles have been consistently great shooters. Personally, I have no issue with the stock. With a bit of work and bedding, it will function just fine.

I presently have a 110 in 7RM that I use as my LR hunting rifle. It will shoot MOA or better out to 940yds. So that stock can be made to work well. More or less box stock Savage.

The accutrigger is supposed to be very nice. I have swapped most of the orig triggers with aftermarket ones. If you go with a Stevens, that is something I would recommend. Very heavy out of the box.

The stocks on the Stevens are much better too.

If you want a heavy barrel, the FV is the best buy on the market today. Whether plastic bits trouble you or not is a personal thing. I have no issue with it in fact enjoy its lighter weight.

Canuck,

I picked up a 12FV in 308 from fellow CGN 'Arch' and am very very pleased so far, the stock is not top grade but I can live with it, the fit and finish of the 'metal' and construction is I feel very good, Im going to replace the stock with a Bell & Carlson from Cabellas for 80 US........other than that I have 0 complaints !!!!! :D

Canuck,

If you have been following other posts in other sections of CGN SIR Mail Order has a sale on the Stevens line of rifles for 299.00, being a 'Savage' I would assume the accuracy would be right around 1 inch + - at 100 and less with good handloads,
pretty good for 300 bucks.......

Thanks for all the replies....

I was looking at the Stevens, but really wanted a heavy barrel this time around (my CZ is the American sporter) and with the accutrigger on it as well, I think its worth the extra $190.

I am not concerned about the stock that much, if I want to, I can swap it out later as Jennis mentioned.

I have heard nothing (except one person mentioning a plastic follower or whatever) but awesome stuff about this line of Savages, seems like a no-brainer.

Now it's deciding between a 12FV, M-305, 9mm pistol, or Enfield.... :?

I would stay with the 12FV....When/If the M305 goes 'restricted' (?????) You will still have something you can drag anywhere.....plus the 308/7.62 is cheap and is easy to scrounge.....I would avoid the enfields like a subpoena from a Turkish Court, I own three but for over all fun stick with the 12 FV

Just my .02

Okay...

First... Savage service is SECOND TO NONE... I had an issue with my new 12FV in 308, the trigger was not adjustable 1.5 lbs and up, more like 3 lbs and up... Savage Canada paid for shipping to them and back to have the "repair" done... I had the gun back in under 2 weeks!!!

Second... Bang for the buck is AWESOME with Savage! Both my 12FV's, one in 223 and one in 308, group well under an inch at 100 meters... I don't care about the "looks" of a gun, i.e. the stock others complain about, it's gotta work and Savage sure meets the bill!!! I have no complaints about the plastic follower that pushes up the next round, the mag well IS metal...

I have shot a 2.5 inch group at 600 meters with my 12FV in 223... It's the best group I have ever fired and I really LOVE the accutrigger!!!

Cheers
Jay

Hmmm... hard to look at anything else right now,a s I have been considering one of these for so long, hard to say no to such a great gun/deal...lol

Hey guys.... I believe the only difference between the 12FV and the base model 10FP-LE is the extra swivel stud and the parkerized finish....

Do you think it's worth the extra $50 for those two features on the LE? Is the park finish a lot nicer than the blue on the 12FV?

Thanks

Larger bolt handle and black finish on the bolt body on the 10FP-LE along with the matte finish and extra swivel stud. Of the two, I would go 10FP-LE, or whatever is available now

If you don't mind a bit of elbow grease the Boyds Varmint stock is pretty decent. I stuck one on my 12fv in 22-250.

I see the 12FV has a 26" barrel, and the 10FP a 24"....

Is there any advantages or disadvantages to either length when shooting .223?

CanuckShooter, The 12FV and 10FP BOTH have the oversized bolt handle knob... Of the two rifles, I prefer the 10FP finish, it's a flat black park look, but that being said, the two 12FV's that I own are NOT a shiney blue, more like a non-glossy black finish. I went with the 12FV as I wanted the barrel length and saw no need to pay the extra money for an extra swivel stud on the stock and a parked bolt... Anything I would be pointing the rifle at won't be able to see the "shiney" bolt...

I've got a 12FV in 308 as well and I love it. The gun shoots better than me. I've placed an RCBS precision mic in mine and it has very close tolerances, which is very good for accuracy. The folllower wont be a problem because as you've already mentioned the mag housing is metal and the plastic will allow for less brag or friction on your cartridges.

The blueing is more like a very deep black. The stock is serviceable and I'll be adding some rebar to the forearm to stiffen it up once hunting season is over. So far it still works good enough for 600-800 yard shooting.

If your not that far from me you can take mine for a quick test drive to see if it's what you really want. I like mine enough that I won't be selling it any time soon.
That accutrigger is also really nice.

SAVAGE lE 308

No problim takeing down a 6in square platr at 600m with norma match of takeing an empty 12 gauge shell off a target stand at 100 m with the primer faceing you.(BANG FOR THE BUCK BABY)

I too am about ready to buy a 12fv (in .243), but read somewhere that the barrels are "cheap", anyone have a comment on this?
The whole internet shooting community says the Savage 10 and 12 family are just about the best shooters out there- even above rifles of twice the retail price. I was looking at the Rem 700 VLS, Ruger 77target or Savage. Just wondering where/how they saved the cost here?? :!:

Comments apprieciated.

The cost savings seem to be in the stocks.........they truly are the cheapest pieces of crap I've seen on a factory rifle. That said, they work fine and don't seem to have any negative affect on accuracy. Barrels are button rifled, metal fit and finish is great, action is smooth, other than the stock they are comparable to the rugeremchester's out there. I don't think they actually shoot any better than the remmies or winnies as they all turn out sub MOA produciton rifles these days, but they shoot just as good for less $$.
All depends what you want for a stock....when you get into the 10FP with mcmillan stock at a little over $1k, then you are in the same ballpark as the PSS, Stealth, VS, etc. just depends what you like.

What was the stock with shipping, and how much work was it?

I think it was $140 when our dollar was pretty low. As far as work goes, the action was inletted fine, the exterior only needs a light sanding and finish applied (I used tru-oil followed by some paste wax when it was dry), but the barrel channel was cut for a sporter (pencil thin barrel) and had to be opened up. I see they have a stock listed as "Factory Barrel Channel" for the short action savage on their site, mabey they have addressed this issue and offer one already opened up?
