I have a parallel thread in this topic asking about first precision rifle suggestions. What do you think about a Savage 12FVSS .308 for $700 as a starter gun? Low round count, and seems to be in VG condition.

Rob

It is not a "precision" rifle, it is a factory sporter rifle. Some shoot quite well (Less than 1 MOA), others less so. Above all, find a rifle that fits your physique and your budget and have fun. Brands are not important.

Biggest weakness is the stock. That is why I recommended the BVSS which has a laminated stock that fits more shooters very well.

You don't need a stainless action but these are the only ones Savage puts nicer stocks on.

If you go with this rifle, you should reinforce the forend especially if you plan on using a bipod. proper bedding should also be done as the inletting is way too generous.

The stock work is pretty easy and gives you a chance to add alot of weight if planning on shooting F class.

Overall, a decent rifle but I feel the CM blued rifles are less money and shoot just as well. The 12FV should be $100 to $150 less money then the SS versions. I would put that money towards a better stock/stock work, optics, trigger and reloading gear.

I just paid $500 for the same in .223 including a 20moa rail (stock had been painted but not a biggie) and fellow also included some components as an extra which was very cool.

If $700 for about $125 more I would rather buy new - first owner, warranty... personal preference. (think the one you're talking about has been up for over a month....)

Different people have different definitions for "precision" if I can get a <.5 moa group at 300m thats precision for me while for Obtunded that would be the equivalent of minute of barn.

If you're looking for a "starter" precision rifle and you're working on your shooting then may work quite well. When want better accuracy (and you've put some wear on barrel from practice), then are a couple dealers on the forum that can help you with a screw on match barrel for your Savage and can take it to the next level (for a fairly low incremental price). Trigger is good/adjustable, but if want to can swap it out (for a fairly low incremental price), are also better stock options. Just depends on what your plan is.

As you asked for a "starter" rifle, think anything under $600 that has adjustable trigger and upgrade potential quite good. I am waiting on laminate target stock with adjustable cheek piece for the Savage I picked up. Total price for stainless steel heavy barreled adjustable trigger rifle in laminate thumbhook adjustable cheek piece stock just under $1000 excluding an optic... am happy with that.

Can also buy Rem 5R new with good HS precision stock for $1200. $500 more than this 700 Savage but stock about $400 of that thus only $150 (tax) more to buy new...

So if you were to suggest two guns, both upgradeable, for around $600, and I was to then get the rings, bases and scope, what would you suggest I look for?

Let's assume that I'm not going to start switching barrels right away. I've heard Remington 700 mentioned a lot, and Savage 10 or 12 as well. Unfortunately there is such an abundance of models for either brand, that without having the experience to know what I need, I'm a bit lost.

It looks like my SIG P226R has sold, so I'm good to move ahead with doing something.

I really enjoy my 12FVSS in .308. I don't even notice the plastic stock. The gun is more accurate than I am. I don't shoot much past 300 yards yet anyway. That being said.... if I could get it in the BVSS stock instead, I would. I prefer the look of wood much more than plastic. Great gun. Super accurate. I paid $500 for mine but I consider that a pretty good deal. $600 or $700 wouldn't be too bad.

What do you think of the following for $1300?:

Model 12 Savage LRPV 223 with Macmillan stock
Centre Point 4-16 pwr Mildot scope with sunshade
Leupold rings and bases
Harris Dual swivel bipod
Flambeau hard case
