Savage 17 hmrs?

I just bought one... Im very very happy... gophers turn inside out at 150 yards... we punch holes in those 1 pound propane bottles at 150 yards and Im shooting inch to inch and a half groupings in 150 to 200 yard shots with a 3x9 40 scope inside of 75 yards Im punching holes on holes...

if you've got 15 buks for 50 rounds to spend you wont be unhappy with the savage 17 HMR

I have a heavy barrel laminate stock version. Not too bad in the weight dept. Accuracy is great. Like MudChucker, under an inch at 100 yards, no probs.

The rifle itself is more of a club to gophers. One would think it'd squish 'em pretty good, especially the heavier versions :p. The 17HMR round is something to behold. Head shots routinely lifting the gopher out of the hole an flipping them over. I hit one and he did a 360° back flip and laid there. When we got up to him, there was barely any blood, and virtually no damage . After poking him, it turns out his innards were pretty much liquidized.

.17 HMR from 50 yards to about 115 yards.

Shooting fruit can also be quite impressive...especially citrus fruits. The smell of all the juice aerosolized in the air is also nice. :)

They are fantastic guns, the first time I took my 93R17 to the range, after I had dialed in the scope, I shot 15 rounds into a group the size of a quarter at 100 yards. That gun has since been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of gophers (as well as the occasional skunk or raccoon) in my area over the past 5 years. And as Bull's-Eye has shown damage can range from a small entry with no exit to a blown apart gopher! I'm going to give the old girl a bit of a break now as I just picked up a brand new Savage 93R17 BTV Mako Stainless. Don't buy one buy two!

...I've owned two Savages in .17 HMR in the last two years. Both heavy barrel, one tupperware and blued the other stainless thumbhole laminate.
Both will shoot M.O.A. consistently. For a production trigger the ACCUTRIGGER is pretty decent. Both rifles have "gritty" feeling actions, even after several hundred rounds. Both fit and finishes are average for the price range. My synthetic blued functioned flawlessly out of the box without hiccups. The more costly BTVS had frequent FTF's due to weak primer strikes. I also had to modify the magazine and magazine well as it was troublesome to install and wouldn't release easily. In summary they are very accurate rifles...but smooth function and decent fitment take a back seat.

I have the 17hmr stainless thumbhole stock. Every one who shoots with me just love it. I had a new shooter out last week. He was hitting 30-30 brass at 50 yards without a problem. We even hit a few 17 brass at 50 yards. I did shoot out to 300 yards (very calm day) and hit a few soup cans.

Savage Mark II's chambered in .17 (HMR or HM2) are actually cheaper than the same model chambered in .22LR! When I bought my "G" if I would have gotten the .17 version I could have saved myself $75!

As the owner of 4 .17 M2's-I would say go for one of these in a savage, I have them in regular/heavy barrel/accutriger+ a NEF ultra varmint-$9/box of 50 is liveable for the fun factor+accuracy. I have made easy hits out to 120m no problem :rockOn:

I have the savage 17 in synthetic heavy barrel. The barrel is free floating, and the accutrigger is really nice. I'm consistently getting < .5 MOA on a calm day with a bipod. Just watch though when purchasing. Make sure that the magazine fits TIGHTLY in the magazine clip. A few have been loose and either require modification or replacement (or you need to push up on the magazine when chambering a round). Aside from that, TONS of guys shoot the savages. They're a quality gun, and fun to shoot with. These guns also like to be shot dirty. It usually takes 25-30 rounds for mine (and my friend's) gun to start throwing really tight groups (clean shoots ~ 1", or maybe a little larger). They're good out to about 200/250 yards, after that, the accuracy really drops off because the bullet is so light. I really like the Federal 17gr. v-max rounds (as do alot of other people).

As far as rimfire goes, these guns are snipers. Top that with a bullet that's traveling at 2500 fps, and you're in store for a whole lotta fun.

If you're looking for more info on the 17's, a good forum to check it is www.17hmr.net

Not my picture, but one I really like.

what kind of groupings would you get with a 20 km/hr wind @ 100 yrds with such a small and light bullet????

I think most will know the answer to that question. Time to get out the trusty old 10/22 or something .22WMR and for those that have to see blood, guts, destruction and giggle out loud "I killed the little f**ker gooooood!" then a .223 or 22-250 should do the trick (guilty when I was in my 20's :p).

I don't own a savage but i own a marlin in 17 hmr, yesterday i was hitting clays at 200 yards no problem, next week i'll try 300 yards, there is a video on youtube of a guy shooting at 400 yards, so far the little 17 has surprised me, i haven't shot any game with it, but filled water bottles at 125 yards get destroyed quite easily, good luck.

I've found that the .17 HMR is such a fast tiny bullet that when I shoot clays the clays don't shatter...even after I've hit it 3-4 times around the same spot.
