Savage 170

Anyone have any thoughts or experience with a savage 170 pump action 30-30? I have a chance to trade for one but I have never seen one and don`t know what they are worth.

I'd try cycling a box or so of ammo thru it first. Most of them have feeding or ejection problems.I wouldn't trade anything of value even if it is problem free because they don't command a lot of coin.

I owned a Savage 170 about thirty years ago and got rid of it pretty quick. The thing either jammed or wouldn't feed properly.

Had one a few years back and could'nt wait to get rid of it... It's only redeeming feature was that it was light and handy but feeding and accuracy sucked. The specimen I had was in minty shape definitely not abused, yet it would cycle properly only periodically and the best I could get in terms of accuracy was 6" at 100 yards, scoped.

I just traded off a CIL version of the same rifle. Mine worked like a charm but you could not run the action easy, pump it back and slam it forward. One of the biggest issues was getting the tube mag loaded properly, the shells have to sit on the holder properly or you will have issues. 170gr bullets worked better that the 150's, and the reason that I moved it along was because of the weight. With a scope it was heavier than by 308 BLR.
All it all I think it was a great gut.
