I've been looking at buying this rifle. If anyone has one? Are they accurate?
Any likes or dislikes? What would be a good price for one New? Thanks Tikka

They are freakin laser beams. Many a furry rodentia has been touched by this calibre out to 200. Ammo is a little $$ though. At least I think so.

I love my Savage 93 - way more accurate than you would think at this price. Get the accutrigger models (all new ones have it I think).

These guns are generally accurate in comparison to guns at any price! :D

Very accurate, clean, simple rifle for the price. Friend has a marlin in 17hmr that is not as accurate as the my savage (nothing against marlins). The clip however seems to dislike dust. Other then that, most accurate I've seen!

Thanks Guys. I really like the looks of this gun. If it shoots as good as it looks I will be very happy. I also see that Remington has a Target Semi auto in .17hmr as well. I wonder if they are as accurate as the savage model 93. The price is not to bad on these model 93 HMMM!! another trip to the bank then to my local gun shop to order one.

X2

At first I thought my clip was a lemon....but after cleaning it w/ a shop vac I didn't have problems.

I've also ordered a Boyd Pepper Laminate Ross Thumbhole stock to put my Savage in, I'll post pics when I get it, and finish it.

I almost bought the new Savage .17HMR. The one with the thumbhole stock. I was ready to order one, but thought I'd go check my local gunstore. As it turns out they just got a bunch in. I looked at it and was disapointed. I'm sure it shoots very well. I love the boyd thumbhole stock on it. However the rest didn't look well made. I guess I just expect better fit and finish. The magazine really bothered me. So back to my hunt. I'm looking at the Ruger 77/17 with the laminate stock and bull barell. But I'll probably be getting the Remington Rangemaster in .204 first.

Anyways my advice. I check one out. If you're picky like me, you might not like the fit and finish. Personally I'll pay a bit more for a gun that shoots and is well made/looks good.

What do you expect for a gun under $500? What didn't look well made? The barrels have a nice polish....the bolt is sleek, and slides smoothly....the only thing that LOOKS a little flimsy is the accutrigger - but I love mine. You should actually shoot one before you chime in as the peanut gallery...

Mykhaylo, perhaps you should read through my post before chiming in yourself.

Like I said, I'm sure it shoots well (I read the reviews). I was ready to put down the money for the rifle. In fact I was ready to just order it online, until I checked it out in real life. What do I expect for a $500 gun? Well my Ruger K10/22T (Target model in stainless) was about that price range, and the fit/finish is far superior. Plus it shoots exceptionally well with the right ammo.
So ya I expect a lot.

What didn't I like? The ackward crummy magazine for a start. I would have been happy if it was a straight single shot bolt action. The gun would have had more class. Look at the fit and finish. You can see it's not what it should be. If you're just looking for a shooter and don't care, then go for it. I won't touch a Marlin either, and they shoot very well and are very cheap. I guess I want quality and a shooter. Especially when the cost doesn't stop at the gun. Now you have to add glass, and rings. I'll spend the extra and get something that I'll be happy with. A few hundred dollars more isn't much when you consider all the other costs.

The savage suits my needs just fine. True, its not much of a looker, but gophers don't seem to mind. I was looking for something to replace my 10/22 so was looking for the most basic and cheapest model with the best accuracy possible. After shooting a couple other models (rem, ruger, marlin), I found the savage good for the price, others may disagree. And your right about the magazine Epoxy7, not the best.

Can't argue with you there...the magazine could be better....but personally, I just prefer a repeater to a single shot (seeing as the gun is my gopher gun). But the magazine on this rifle is definately a weakness.

I'll post pics of mine when I get my Boyd's stock.

Epoxy7 - if you do pick up that Ruger, I'd like to know your impressions of it.

I had the misfortune of owning one of the Rem597 .17hmr semis at one time.
Epps had a couple of laminated stock ones, some kind of limited edition IIRC.
Kept it less than a month, then traded it (back to Epps, who took good care of me). Tried every available hmr load in it and couldn't get better than 2 inches @ 100 yards. Very cheap feeling, plastic trigger, occasional feeding problems. In comparison, my H&R/NEF single shoots well under 1 inch, with 2 different loads, for less than half the price of the 597. I know that a lot of guys enjoy tinkering with and improving factory guns, and I do too. It's fun turning a gun that you know is a POS before you buy it into an accurate shooter. It's not fun finding out that something is a POS when you didn't expect it.

A few years back hen 17hmr first came out I though it was a gimmick. Then, working at wholesale, I heard so much about them. "Oh their wonderful", "Oh they are laser beams" But I still wouldnt give in. $20 for 50 rds was the clincher for me. Then My ex bought one and we went gopher hunting. I ended up buying a 17 after that because out to 200 it is every bit as effective on gophers as a .223. And her $300 rile shot as well as my $1000 rifle and weighed ALOT less.

It is so easy to take the non-accutriger savages and make a wicked triggerpull too. Great guns. Match accuracy for $300 and a pop can. The 20 gr bullets are suposed to be geared to killing coyotes. Havent tried that yet, but man, using the V max bullets, just make sure you dont shoot a gopher from too close, or you'll get gopher on your shoes like did! Accurate as hell and damn near explosive at close range. I love these little wonders. I was wrong about 17. Its not a gimmick. But the ammo does cost almost the same as .223 ammo so its not for plinking in the same volume as you would with a .22

For gophers out to 500 I still like my .223 tho. The little wonder cant do everything.

And surprisingly, they have a very dissapointing efect on magpies.

It might be a while before I get the Ruger. I just ordered a Remington XR-100 Rangemaster in .204. I'll be waiting a while before I can afford to put the glass I want on it. After that I'll look at the Ruger. 17HMR is probably 4-5 months away for me. We'll see. I'd like it to be sooner but you know how these things go.

With the XR-100 I have Savage to thank for the excellent trigger. Remington realized they needed the adjustable XR40 trigger to compete with the Savage Accutriger. All around everyone wins.

payed $540 new in the box with the thumbhole stock last week-end.Getting a quarter size grouping at 100 yrds first time out.looking for the same grouping at 200 yrds next week-end.###y little thing I love it!!
