When was production of 1899,99 rifles moved from NY to Mass; was all production moved at the same time, or was it a gradual process? Can the place of manufacture help date the rifle? There is a lot of conflicting info out there. What is a "Perch Belly" on either straight or pistol grip buttstock? I have 5 models 1899, 99 and would like to identify them more accurately.

My 1899 .32-40 Win. was made in Utica, has a crescent butt plate, straight buttstock, schnoble tip, 26" barrel, and appears to be a takedown. (1911?)

My .303 Sav. also has a crescent butt, straight buttstock, schnoble tip, and was made in Utica but has a 24" barrel. (1937-38?)

My 30-30 win. appears to have had the barrel replaced (26.5") and there is nothing on the barrel except 30-30. It has a straight buttstock and schnoble tip. The only other marking is the serial No. 90.7xx. It also appears to be a take down model.

My 300 Sav. was made in Chicopee Falls, has a pistol grip stock, schnoble tip.

My 250-3000 Sav. was also made in Chicopee Falls, has a pistol grip, but a straight forearm.

Several have scopes or receiver sights that may be hiding something, but those without have no info in those locations. They are all quite good shooters and all are sighted in so I don't want to remove the sights. None are what a collector would call excellent, some perhaps poor condition. All have been refinished at some time and all have had cracked stocks professionally repaired. I'm not really a collector (except Enfields) but have a liking for lever guns, particularly 99's.

I'll take a shot.

The last Utica made 99 was serial number 4476XX, so anything made before that serial number was a Utica 99. When they started in Chicopee Falls, Mass they started at 500,000 in May of 1947.

Your first gun, the 32-40 sounds like a model 1899A with a T/D feature.

Second gun is a model 99A (not an 1899A) big difference and if the barrel hasn't been cut a 99A is a hard gun to find, really to bad yours have all been refinished.

Third gun sounds like an 1899A as well.

Fourth is a model 99EG. In 300 Savage it's the most common model and caliber combination Savage made. Kind of like a Winchester 94 in 30-30, not real uncommon.

Your last will be either a 99F or a 99R. Real easy to tell the difference. Look on the right hand side of the barrel right in front of the receiver and it will say 99F if it's an F, if it doesn't you have a 99R.
