I neither love nor hate them, but always liked the looks and handling of the older ones with slim fore ends and schnabel tip, and a straight low comb. I believe these rifles are at their best shot with a receiver or tang rear sight, not a scope. So equipped, they are lively, easy to carry, easy to shoot, but not 'Modern". Far from ugly, I thought they were beautiful! The end was near in the '70's and 80's when Savage put wide grooved fore ends and hump backed monte carlo stocks on them and tried to compete with bolt actions. They are certainly not as precise as a bolt action, not as fast as a pump or semi. There are better hunting tools today, and other cool rifles to try out, so the four that have passed through my hands ( An old take down 99 in .250, a 1950's 99F in .308, a 1970's 99A in 250 and a 1980's 99c in .243) all found new homes. Shot some deer and a bunch of targets with them, discovered their charms, and moved on. No regrets.
