This one appealed to the Fudd in me I suppose - so it came home with me last week. First 99 for me. I've seen dozens - maybe 100s - of 99s thru the years for sale but always was waiting maybe to get a 99H - hopefully in 375Win. I never found one to buy and this one was priced right and is a sub for that - for now. I just love the no nonsense lines of those 20" barreled 99 SRCs.
This one's a Savage 1899 SRC in 30-30 and I'm thinking a Model F but not sure. The serial number is 122### and dates to 1912 - 102 years young. The rear sight doesn't seem original and missing elevator. The Buttstock is missing slivers of wood and has several repairs - but is sound and operational. Forend is stamped with matching serial number and haven't checked the Buttstock yet. It has the brass spool, counter, and cocking indicator. It weighs in a 7 lbs 9 oz. I was suprised at how handy the safety is - it's different for me but very easy to find/use. Chamber and bore are very good and action is tight and slick. The round action bottom is great to carry and at the rifle's balance point.
The front sight is knife thin almost - while probably good for precision my old eyes can't find it well. Any front/rear sight suggestions? It's factory drilled for a tang peep but never D&T for scope bases.
I had it out shooting and even hunting this week (spring bear just opened here) and does that brass spool action work slick. The cartridges come up and are held immediately in perfect alignment - almost like a controlled round feed. Easy to unload too.
