Easy Big Fellah, it was just figurative to say the only guy you're allowed to sell it to is me.;) :) You know the 1899C is my fave and I'd never do anything to hurt one. To couple it with being chambered in 38-55 would be my dream rifle.

Having said that there is nothing like an coin or compass inlay to really embelish the look of what would have been a classic rifle. I know Les will agree.:p

Dabbler, send me a p.m., I know where there are 3 1899's in 303 Savage, all of them priced under $200.

Of course hs4570 won't believe that. (insert smug smiley here).

My, what an INTERESTING thread!

I wish I had kept a dozen or three of those old Savages that I obviously sold too cheap at gun shows and such....:p

But there are a few things that affect used gun prices that have not been mentioned yet:

1. A willing buyer.

2. An anxious seller.

3. The time of the year, with January usually being the low point for prices since a lot of guys are paying off Christmas debts and are not buying guns themselves, and/or are selling guns to pay the credit card balance. Highest prices are about a month before the big game season opens in the area (for Ontario, the November gun hunt for deer).

4. Regional differences. Winchester 94s fetch more money in the west than they do in the east, and Savage 99s fetch more money in the east than they do in the west. GENERALLY speaking, of course.

5. A good sales pitch, in person or via some type of media.

So I will buy that gun for $200 right now and sell it in October for $400 to somebody that just HAS TO own it.........:D

Doug

A gun is worth what someone will pay, correct.;)

Only problem is that alot of guys in Canada are using Gun Broker as a blue book and don't understand that they're not gonna get the prices they do down there.:(

As far as 99's go, I really don't care about the price, I love the gun and pick up some real interesting and uncommon variations from time to time. Everybody has a favorite.

Heck, down here I wish the dealers and such would use the Blue Book, fer cryin out loud, it is getting down right stupid. Keep your prices reasonable, better for the guys that really want them. Ya'll just have to get Joe to quit hoarding them. :dancingbanana:

Mssrs M D Doug & senior

Mr. MD.....My original response was to the posters query for his ""30/30""! That you can buy "303 Savages" for next to nothing ,I believe is a Canada wide situation as few people envision spending big bucks on obtaining the elusive and uncommon .303 Sav. brass. I may be wrong, but out here, unless its a collector item, very few people are interested in this cartridge and they dont sell well.

If you want .303 sav. 190 gr ballistics ,most know you just go to 180 or 200 gr round nose in your 30/30 and it will get you the same 1980 fps.

If the 99 is in 250, 243, 30/30 300 or 308, I will stay with my opinion on values here on the "west coast".

Mr Doug:

Your analogy of what constitutes favorable buying and selling conditions for you, a Savage and other rifle buyer/seller is probably valid and its nice you wished to share this insight and support the cause. Some of us buy rifles to keep them so this is nice to know information in case the urge to sell all strikes me.
Buy low and sell at a profit, I think I can grasp that too. Sorry about your preceived loss in revenue.
We have a major hunting season from Sept. to December and after that, depending on where you live in BC, you can hunt coyotes and cougar and wolves and in the following spring bears and luckily ,so it continues. There's not too many months you can't hunt someting. I include this only to let you know around Xmas all bets are off, but for the rest of the year the buying and selling of guns doesn't slow down at all out here.

Mr Senior: .... re: my attending gunshows

We have a gunshow a month around here at different towns/cities and have been going to them for about 20 years (in my present location) so I dont' feel I've misrepresented Savage values here..
.................................................................................................

More than over 300 have viewed this post and if a couple of them in B.C., post and concurr that I'm wrong and have misrepresented used Savage lever values here, I will recant and accept the true faith and apologies will be offered.

..... I enjoyed our discussion, and will leave closeing remarks to the three supporting gents that feel aggrieved..

Savage 99's

God I love the search function on this site.... :D

Just picked up another Savage 99 myself today.... It's a 99F in .308 Win with the brass ctg counter & safety on the lever. Serial # 901,###. It has been nicely reblued at some point. Bore is minty. Came with an old steel tube Weaver K3 in low Weaver rings. Bought it for a "shooter" price.

Anybody know the year of mfg?

after 1950..................the last year listed in the Blue Book.

MadDog has the definitive reference book, and will be able to tell you for sure!

The model 99-F was introduced in 1955 starting at serial number 755,000 and discontinued in 1973. The 308 caliber was introduced in 1957 and the lever/trigger lock safety was changed to sliding safety on top tang in 1960. If I buy these details from "A History of the Savage Model 99 Rifle" by Dave Murray, your 99 would fit between 1957 and 1960. If I do a search based on the serial number, I come up with "After 1951".

One more helpful detail is that in 1959, folding semi-buckhorn rear sigh sight was added for use with scope.

Wow, thanks for the information. Very cool. Looks like my "new to me" rifle & I are very close to the same age... it would be cool if our "year of issue" was the same....
