Just bought an 1899 Hi Power from a fellow CGNer. I can get loaded ammo from Sellier and Belloit but I want to reload. Hornady makes the .228 bullets but I need to get some load recipes from you folks. None of my manuals list this old round.
Thanks!
Kevin

I never loaded the hi-power but checked my old Hornady manual for the 70 gr
IMR4198 from 20.2 to 23.1 gr
RL7 from 19.8 to 23.5
N201 from 22.0 to 27.6
IMR3031 from 22.1 to 27.4
N203 from 22.4 to 29.3

It suggested the best results were with Imr 3031 and N201
This can give you an idea of starting point

26 grains of IMR 4064 worked good for me in Norma brass. Velocity was 2830 fps.

I was not able to go over 26 grains of 3031. Velocity was 2940 fps.

This was from a Brno combo gun.

Ken Waters had good accuracy with 60gr and heavier .224 dia bullets as well. When you're sizing the brass remove the expander button/stem so it will size tighter and able to grip the smaller bullets.................Harold

I reload for a Savage 1899 and a Brno combination gun in 22HP. I have found 3031 to be the best powder with 22 to 24 grs of 3031 with the 70 gr Hornady bullet. I have found with loads over 24 grs accuracy is not as consistant and case life is much shorter. Hope that helps.

Yes that helps! This all helps, thanks everyone :)
Mbogo, I'm amazed that .224 bullets would work. You'd think they'd be wobbling down the bore! Obduration? I have some 60 gr. Partitions on hand that I might try.

I should have asked what brand of dies have you tried and liked? I have to get those too.
Regards,
Kevin

What reloading dies have you used and liked? I have an ad in the EE Ammo and Reloading forum and have had one reply. Your recommendations don't have to be currently available dies, as I am likely to be offered some "oldies but goodies".
Thanks!

I bought my 2nd M99 in .22 HP in 1967 for $30. Bought my 1st in early '60's - can't remember how much I paid.

I used 26 grs of 3031 with a 70 gr jacketed bullet. This was a great groundhog load!

For 55 gr cast lead gas check bullets I used 13 grs of 4227 or 15 grs of 4198.

Did any one else notice that the old CIL 70 gr pointed softnose bullets with a lot of lead exposed had an almost "tracer" like effect?

The .22HP requires a bullet with a short ogive to hit nose first. We won't go into the tigers and grizzlies that fell to this round in the early uniformed days.I have a pic of a lady miner in BC with two grizzly hides hanging on her clothesline she shot with her Savage HP.....Harold
