Hey everyone, I've got a savage 220 that's about 10 years old now. When new it would shoot 1 moa easily. The last few years the accuracy has been dropping off. Brought it to a few shops who gave me the runaround, said nothing looked wrong. Action screws, base, rings etc all tight and torqued. It liked both federal and remington. Shot both great. No damage to the crown, super clean. Barrel nut is also tight. Any advice??

All of the shooters I know swear bye the Accutips. I know what I’d be trying after a proper barrel cleaning!

That’s the problem with plastic (invisible) buildup by sabots in the rifling, the barrel appears pristine but all that you may have accomplished is polishing the plastic coating to a mirror finish. Longstud mentions ‘proper cleaning’ which means more solvents, a heavy duty bronze brush and lots of elbow grease. You will eventually see and be surprised by the strips of plastic coming out. Remington barrels can go sour within 7-8 shots, Hasting barrels are good for 2 dozen shots and my 220’s using Remington Accubonds get cleaned ‘properly’ after 20 rounds if I expect consistent and good accuracy out to 150 yards. In spite of all the hype I won’t attempt a shot beyond that yardage unless it’s a wounded animal that needs follow up shots.

Thanks for the advice. I let it soak in solvent for a couple hours and went to town with brass. Did it with copper remover as well. I bedded the stock a couple nights ago while I had it out. Will get it back together soon. I was getting 3-4" at 200 yards originally. Took a buck at 198 a few years back. Clean shot, so I know the gun was capable at one point.
Thanks again.

I've had my 220 for 10 years now likely. Thinking about it, I clean mine about every 5 rounds. Only because I take 3 at a target before season then maybe 1 or 2 during deer season if I'm lucky. Then it's cleaned and put away.

I only shoot 3" accutips and they have a white plastic covering the sabot. Can't say I've ever seen plastic come out on a brush either. Dont have any accuracy trouble as I take 100 yard target shots and they are always in the 3" circle.
