Howdy gang

Will be picking up a couple more projects this week (just waht I need!). A pair of Savage 23A's. Supposed to be lacking at least one magazine, and a some other smaller parts.

Anyone have some insights into these 'ol gems? Like 'em? Hate 'em?

Will post pics when they come in.

Well, they are here! Pictures when Camera's batteries are charged...

Turns out, these are probably model 22sporters. No sights, need some other parts, but surprisingly clean (probably made between 1919-1923). They are not identical in profile. One has a slightly shorter, but heavier barrel.

Cool thing? Receiver, and barrel are one piece. Very solid. They have a series of 4 tapped holes across on the top, so I'm thinking bases n' optics are the easiest way out.

Pretty excited on this end...

Love those old Savage sporters, I have two Mod 23aa, these are the updated ones with the speed lock triggers and more modern magazines, Still one piece barreled action also the bolt has two locking lugs.

Also have a soft spot for the Mod 19s as well

Full size adult rifle, real pleasure to shoot. Congrats on your find!

These rifles are almost imposible to find because nobody wants to part with them. (like me!)

Easy way to tell if they're model 1922's or 23A's.

If they're 1922's the back of the bolt will be flat, if they're early 23A's they'll have a rounded bolt on the back.

Chances are they're 23's as the 1922's were only made a short while before they modified them and brought in the 23's. I'd say they only made less than 5000 of them.

The only one I've seen in Canada (at least on CGN) is mine so far but it would be great to know there are more around to find!

suffering some tech difficulties with pics....maybe Santa will bring me a camera!

The only reason I suspect 22 sporter, is the ejector is not part of the magazine retaining assembly. It fits through a cut in the receiver (old mossy style). Might just be "early" 23A.

Pics this afternoon!

Thanks Blasty. I'm a project magnet!

So far it seems I'll need:
- Sights, or scope bases...scope bases may be much easier. These had a peep rear sight, and no dovetail for "standard" sights. But have tapped holes across the top. (2 pair, one big screw, n' one smaller one)
-Front magazine retainer (x2)
-Rear magazine retainer (x1)
...these rifles differ from schematics I've seen for the 23A, as the ejector is not part of the rear magazine retainer.
-Magazines (they came with one, but it's a pretty sad mag). I'm feeling inspired by the mossberg, and marlin mag-mod threads and might go that route...

I did fire the one that has a rear mag retainer, but hard to determine accuracy with no sight! Bores look good. Google tells me these are fine shooters.

Pretty nice find Cam, Like Maddog says they look like 1922 models, small ejection port.

The drill and tapped holes on the rear reciever are for Savage made sights, The screw pattern might even match the Savage made peep sights mod 10 and 15 both my 23aa wear these sights

Front should be standard 3/8 dovetail. I think someone makes reproduction Mags for those now, Check Numrich....

If the bores are good those old Savages will be good and accurate!

Those are the quick n' dirty low-res shots. Will post some better detailed pics, and shots of them Taken down. The magazine retainers are quite simple in design, and if I can't find originals, making some should be straightforward. Magazines n' sights will make these "pricey" projects.

Stole this pic from gunvalues (found through google images). It was looking at this picture that made me think it was a model 22. Ejector is seperate from magazine retainer, and firing pin has the 2 points of contact.

Also seems like the original rear sight was a model #5.

If time permits, will take them down and snap more pictures.

MADDOG : When you suggest the bolt is "flat" on the back..what exactly are you describing? The knurled cocking piece on these are actually concave.

Yep, those are what I call the flat backs, they're 1922's alright, nice grab.

Sights will be probably just as hard to find as the 1922's are, that large hole in the front of the rear sight is a bugger to find a sight for. When they went to the 23's they made both the holes the same size. I'll take some pics of my 1922 sights after supper and give you an idea of what your looking for.

Here they are, the rear sight as you can see has the one larger hole than the other, hard sight to find. Even harder was the Redfield 102G that was made for the 1922's and 23's.
