So I have a new Savage 24 in .30-30/20 gauge on it's way and I am wondering if I should turn it into a .30-30 Ackley Improved...

What do you guys think? I plan on shooting 130 grain Barnes TTSX in it for deer and other critters.

Anyone can recommend a smith to do the work?

Cheers, troutseeker

Just my opinion, but I think the 24 action isn't strong enough to enjoy the full potential of the AI. I undertand the 222 Rem is available and it's a high pressure cartidge but I'd stick with stock 30/30 chambering.

I would be tempted to try the new lever revolution 30-30 ammo from Hornady before you attempt a wildcat changeover. The breach pressures of a wildcat cart may be too much for the 24. The lever revolution has shown some good performance in relation to the old blunt nosed round and may give you what you want for a lot less money.

My understanding is that the pressures of the AI cartridges ran the same or less than the parent. The articles that I have read so far indicated that the 30-30 AI is a worthwhile improvement, but I am not a smith.

Why don't you post this question under gunsmithing and see what advice you get there?

From what I have read, the Ackley produces about the same lateral pressures, but due to the reduced taper of the case, considerably less rearward thrust. This is one of the reasons that the brass will last so much longer.
If you enjoy reloading, have it done. There is some info in this thread. I found it easy to load, and my rifle was very accurate, but then again, it was accurate with factory fodder too. I used about 2 grains above listed max .30-30 loads with Reloder 15 powder.
BTW, inexpensive dies are available from Lee Precision. Check their website under "Very Limited Production Die Sets". Just over 40 bucks, I think, a whole lot less than RCBS.
