Hey, any reason why a Savage 25 Walking Varminter in.223 would not be a good choice for a non competition target rifle? half MOA or so is all I could really hope for and I won't be shooting past 200m

Seems to me it fits the bill 100% for my needs.

Gorgeous thumbhole laminate stock, nice deep bluing, long heavy but tapered barrel, well known brand for making accurate reliable rifles, very good factory trigger, 3 locking lugs, short lift bolt and a crowned muzzle.

I don't like that the barrel is not held on by a nut, but by two pins. I also don't like the fact that its only a 4 round mag. In fact that alone may make me leave it. I can't find an upgrade mag for it either.

Any issues that will come back and make me regret getting one of these later?

Yea I'd love a Cooper Montana or a Tikka T3X Varmint, but I can't justify the costs of those.

I know everyone talks about the model 10, 11 and 12 Savage rifles and even Axis 2 rifles with heavier barrels, but I don't hear much about the Model 25 Walking Varminter. I find really good reviews on line but I value all of your input more than some random reviewer who may be paid to give good reviews.

I don't want a composite stock, so I would have to, at some time buy a laminate stock for it later so the cost would go up if I buy a rifle with one.

thanks very much,

Have one and it's a 1/4" at 100yds I have won a few events with it as well! They have a three lug bolt and I believe that's why they shoot so well!

I pillar bedded my buddies Savage 25 walking varminter with thumbhole stock, loaded some berger 52gr flat base bullets and shot 5 into a dime at 100y, then I shot a 5 shot 6" group at 675Y.

Accuracy is oustanding to say the least and I have wanted one ever since.

No need to buy a laminate stock for it, it already has a fantastic one!

A little tweeking and a 25 would be a great buy.
