Savage 24S-E 22/410

I have a savage 410/22 over under, the gun will shoot the 410 load but does not fire the 22. Before sending it off to a gunsmith I'm hoping to get some insight into how to correct this.

I saw a 20/22 savage over under at the range just the other day.. it was an older firearm.. there was some mechanism on the hammer that he flipped over to switch from 22 to 20.

Can you load 22LR as well as 22WMR into it? buddy was saying he was doing that.. strikes me as "usefull" if actually possible.

Is the barrel selector in the correct position to fire each barrel when selected?
Two things come to mind- broken firing pin on 22 LR or selector worn or broken.

P.S.- don't try to shoot 22 LR in a 22 WMR chamber.

If it is the older style with the slide selector they have a habit of breaking (Selector that is)

The selector for 22 or 410 is on the hammer and appears to function properly. Is the firing pin something I should be able to replace on my own?

Open the action.
Set the selector to rifle. With the trigger pressed, push the hammer all the way forward.
Does the firing pin protrude from the breech face?
If not, is the firing pin broken?
Changing it is a simple job.
