I saw a model 99 in the said cal. at Wholesale in S'Toon for like $395.00 or something like that,my question is:" Do they still make ammo?,Is it a good ctg?,Whats it good for? The price was what interested my curiousity.

Yes they still make ammo for the 250-3000

It is a great cartridge for everything up to the size of large deer.

Some of the older 99s had a fairly slow twist barrel that will not shoot the heavier 25 calibre bullets well.

$395.00 in Can$ is a pretty good price if the rifle is in good shape. If it were on this side of the line, it would run US$450.00 or better! 8)

it's a good lil cartridge for deer hunting out to 250 yards or so. I'd say it is slightly hindered by factory ammo, there's not alot of options out there (100 gr. CorLokt, 100 gr. SilverTip), both of which have dismal ballistic coeffictients, therefore it sheds energy FAST past 100 yards.

Plug a good handload into a 250-3000 and it shines a bit more. A 110 gr. Nosler Accubond @ 2700 fps would be a great load.

I think Why Not? was looking for a 99 in .250-3000. If you don't want it, im sure he would like to know about it.

Get "Why Not" to contact Wholesale Sports in S'Toon(hopefuuly he''ll recieve 'good' customer service  ) As I have recently aquired a 300 Savage model 99 instead :)
Thank you fellow Gunnutz for all your information :D

If it was made before 1960 (serial # approx 1000000) it has a slower twist barrel and most likely will not shoot anything over 100 grain bullets with acceptable accuracy--some will shoot the 117 grain round nose bullets and none will shoot the 120's (in my experience).

Later models will shoot the heavier bullets quite well as the twist in the barrel was changed to a faster twist.
