I have just acquired a .300 Savage rifle I believe that its is a Model 99 and would like to find some info & instructions on take down. I did a quick google search but that didn't result in much. Any suggestions

Try 24hourcampfire, there's a forum there. Pictures will help.

Some info on savageshooters as well

If you have a pic post it or a description - barrel length, forend type, magazine type, etc. If it has the scnable forend probably an EG. Couple guys here have a lot of knowledge, esp. Maddog

Nice gun and cartridge I have a couple.

Enjoy

Do you mean "takedown" or do you mean "disassembly"? Savage made takedown rifles; just remove the forend by sliding the button forward and pulling down. Open the action part way, and unscrew the barrel from the receiver. The forend doubles as a handle for this. Bring it forward a couple of inches and fit the boss on the underside of the barrel into the square hole in the barrel channel of the forend. That will give you more grip. The thread on the barrel/receiver joint is righthand.

I guess I mean disassembly, for cleaning and inspecting. That sort of thing.

Just take the buttstock off, you can access all the internals after thats done. Just take the butt plate off and with a long slotted screwdriver take the stock bolt out. Make sure when your putting it back in that you don't over tighten it, thats where 50% of the tang cracks come from.

Whats the serial range? Just wondering the model. Pistol grip or straight grip butt?

I'll buy that tang sight............;)

OK Joe, what the heck does this lad have? Forestock sure looks like a T/D, but that buttstock, pistol grip and curved lever?????

(or is it just my memory playing tricks on me???)

Lunch box special.

It started life as a model 250-3000 but all thats left of that is the receiver and the forearm, the butt stock looks to be a reproduction or replacement stock made by someone back in the day like Fajen.

Also the barrel has been replaced along the line to, notice the front ramp sight, anything under 1926/27 wouldn't have had a ramp front sight, they would have had an integral front sight.

Plus, by the serial number the gun was made in 1917, the 300 Savage wasn't even a thought yet back then, it didn't arrive on the scene till 1920/21.

Wow, the things you learn. I have'nt had a chance to see how it shoots. My old man got the rifle used and probably has no idea of how it started its life.
