Hello all,

I recently ran into a Savage 30E shotgun at a gun shop for a price I couldn't refuse.

It's nothing terribly special, just a working man's 12 gauge pump action with a 30" vent-rib barrel. I have no idea as to what choke it is. Perhaps someone could tell me the inside diameters of the common 12ga chokes?

I'm wondering if anyone has any owners manuals from one that they could perhaps scan in for me. I'd really like to know how it comes apart so I can really get it cleaned out. I've run 2 and a half boxes of #5 shot through it and it's a really great gun for the low low price I paid for it. It's not in great condition, but the bore is clean and the action is smooth.

If anyone has any idea what one of these is really worth, your input would be greatly appreciated. I would love to post pictures, but the posting rules seem to dictate otherwise for me.

Gimme a partial serial number or a date code and I'll look it up and see what choke it came with.

Not real sure what rules are preventing you from posting pics, never run into that before?

Savage made all 30" barrelled working mans level shotguns in Full choke. Having said that a previous owner may have had the choke opened a bit for steel shot use. madddog will know that you never say never with good old Savages. Just when you figure them out a factory oddball will surface. 12 gauge factory (american) barrels will mic from .694" to .699" source: Jack o'Connor's The Shotgun Book. Modified will run .715 to .720. Don't worry if yours isn't really tight, these chokings were for old paper loads with no shotcups. With new loads most modified chokes lean toward full patterns. Only way to tell is shoot at the patterning board. Enjoy that gun, my Uncle Roy carried one for years without a hitch. His was a CIL made by Savage for CIL from the model 30.

regards, Darryl

I wish I could give you a serial number Mad Dog, I really do. However, it seems to have been manufactured without one. Unless of course, you know of a hidden spot on the gun that may contain it. Along side the barrel [oriented as if looking downrange] there's a mark of 9N at the 11 o'clock position, 5N at 8 o'clock, SP is doubled up at about 3 and 3:30. All of those marks are enclosed in an oval. There's also a B3 at 5 o'clock, without an oval.

As for me not being able to post attachment, I was thinking it may be some sort of restriction until I build up X number of posts.

madtrapper, Thanks for the numbers. I just ran the mic in the muzzle and it came out as 0.688" I plan to pattern it a little more formally this weekend. I will definately post results for those interested.

Hi Mad Trapper,
You seem to know a bit more about Savage 12 gauges than I do...I have a Savage Canadian Sportsman 12 gauge pump that I bought 3rd hand and I have no idea about it. I'm a little concerned about running steel shot through it, since I assume it's a full choke. From the history I do know about it, I'm pretty certain it was never re-bored or anything. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
