Savage 325 30-30 rifles -tell me about them

They are plain jane functional rifles that shoot great.AKA Sav 340,CIL 830 and Stevens. A Weaver side mt and you're off to the races.made in .22 Hornet,.222,.223,.225 and 30-30................reliable as taxes..Harold**cast bullet shooters as well

I have own about 40 firearms and there is only 2 that i want back, both are 340 savages, one was a 30-30 and 222rem. Very lite and easy to use, i could hit pop cans at 300yds with the 222

both are POS's IMHO..the CIL 830 30-30 I owned was a true 4MOA rifle on a good day.....the CIL 830 in 222 was true 3 MOA rifle on a good day...junk.....both of them...

I have owned one, used a couple of others, and agree with Rembo. Don't know why anyone would want one when they can get a brand new Stevens 200 or Marlin XL7 for very little more money.

They're only fault is weak extraction with full powered loads or hot rodded handloads. They shoot if you can.My son's .222 is a MOA shooter on a bad day......................19gr- Re7-50 SX not MAX 21gr...............Harold

If I had only ever tried two Model 94's I might think they were junk too....some are inaccurate. Most aren't. My 340 would shoot 1.5 MOA 5-shot groups consistently, 1 MOA on a good day.
Tell me if you find that Marlin XL7 or Stevens 200 in .30-30. Then I'd be interested in one.

Just sold a 340 in 30-30. I've got a scope for one but the stock needed to be cut to fit it so I sold the gun rather than wreck it. I'm waiting for one in 222 when a good one shows up.

I saw one last year at the valley sporstman show in Carp, it was selling for 150. should have took it, but it wasnt in the budget...... hopefully i will come across it again

There has been a few floating around for the last few months. Always seems to be the same ones. Gives the idea of their worth. I fired one and would not have one in my cupboard. Sorry at the prices asked, I still think it is too much for these guns. I would rather own a very well used lever as a shooter.

maddog

I got the one from Joe and it was too nice to cut up the stock. I am looking for a peep sight to fit it if anyone has one floating about. It'll be used for my <100 yard bush rifle this season. Haven't had a chance to test out its accuracy yet.

I had one for years, actually a Stevens 325B in 30-30. Same rifle, as I recall Stevens made the 340 for Savage for a couple of years, 1947-48?

POS. It didn't feed well, had poor accuracy, and kicked like a mule.

Cheap stamped sheet metal mags, single locking lug, cheap, simple extractor, marginal triggers - in short, cheap, entry level guns.
BUT, they will shoot sometimes.
I worked up loads for one in 30/30 that would print 10 into an inch at 100 yards.
A 222 rem i have is going down south as a gift to a farmer friend of mine - it''l be perfect for the tractor when he sees a coyote.
They are nowhere near any collector's value, so bouncing them around in a Versatile won't wreck 'em!

Savage 340 's

I have had a scoped 340 in 30-30 with 22 inch tube for about 10 years now and my brother has had the same in 18.5 inch model. With many handloads useing 110 to 180 grain spitzers they will both hover at the inch mark for 3 shots at 100 yds.

We paid about $110 back then as most people didn't want them as they aren't much to look at and they are just 30-30's.
Many don't know that just by utilizing spitzers instead of round nose in the same weights and same powder charges that the spitzers have as much ft./lbs. energy at 200 yds as the round nose has at 100 yds. A 150 grain spz. started at 2500 fps kills deer fine to 250 yds...no doubt some have shot them at longer ranges also.

Have shot a scoped 340 in .222 many years back that belonged to a friend and it would shoot under an inch with good handloads . Have also seen one in 22 hornet 20 + years back at the range and its owner had converted it to 22 K Hornet. He was plinking empty upright shot gun shells at 200 yds with great success.

No doubt some 340's were not as accurate as others but all I have come in contact with shot well.

Keep your eye on Ebay, they'll be marked WFC 175. Alot of people think they're a Winchester sight because of the letters but it's really a Savage 340 peep sight and fits right onto the two mount holes on the left hand side.

This is the little scope I was gonna mount on the 340, it's a 2 1/4X scope and as you can see the mount is for the 340 where the peep sight usually sits but I would have had to cut your gun to get it on, didn't want to do that.

Coming from me, this is heresy. If I was ever to own another Savage (not likely) it would be a mod 325 chambered in 30-30.
They are light, handy and accurate. I've only owned one but have seen and shot several others. They are consistent good performers. Never noticed any extraction problems with any of them. Mind you I've only seen and used the 30-30, so maybe a rimless cartridge may give problems, I can't say.

If you can get it for a good price, you may not have the prom queen but at least she'll be reliable and dependable at a very modest cost.
