Iv always wanted a 338/06 but cant afford a custom job.Would it not be possible to buy a savage 06 them have it rebarrel to 338/06 ? I understand that barrel removal and headspace are quick and easy. Or would this not be economical?

Has anyone done this?

Thanks Mike.

barrel swap 338-06

hey mike you are on the right track.
my 338-06 is on a ruger 77 that started life as a 270 i also have a 25-06 barrel that goes on it once in a while.

buy a .338 barrel blank and get it to a good gunsmith. probably going to cost $450 to $600. and of course you handload?

good luck ramhunter

oh by the way 338-06 is just fine for a one gun hunter.

500-600 is about double what mine is costng me to ge from 22-250 to 358 win.

If you just stay inside the '06 family with your original gun, and want to do a straight swap (no new stock or anything else) it can probably be done for around 250-300 depending on your gunsmiths mark up and rates. I ordered my barrel from Midway-USA, and had them ship me (to my gunsmith only, business to business only with proper paperwork etc, etc, etc) an Adams and Benett prethreaded prechambered barrel for 225 after duty, taxes and gunsmith markup. The smith is currently installing said barrel for me for $75, so that puts my barrel swap right at 300 bucks. If you have access to gunsmith tools (mainly an action wrench, and a savage barrel nut wrench) you can do the swap at home, headspace gauges are reccomended too, but a FL sized case will work as well.

338-06

As the 22-250 to 358 shooter mentioned it is not to big of a deal and dosen't need to cost a fortune. I have been trying to get 338-06 barrels from Midway for sometime now but have not had any luck however they have had the 35 Whelens in stock from time to time.
I will be submitting another attempt this week, lets keep our fingers crossed. Regards David.
