Hello fellow nutz. I attended the gun show in Saskatoon over the weekend and found a real jewel. It's a mint (99%) little 340, walnut stocked, decent checkering, hardly a mark on it. Also picked up new weaver scope mounts and a spare magazine. The stock is factory trimmed on the left side to accomodate the side mount, so no stock carving required. I installed the side mount, and the base/ring today, mounted a K4 Weaver i had sitting around, and noticed that the centerline of the scope is to the right of the rifle bore, far enough that the bolt contacts the scope and can't cycle. Are these new mounts garbage? Are the scopes always mounted to the side of the receiver? Is there a different brand of mounts that would remedy this problem? Any and all comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Dogger

The holes drilled for the mount were drilled a bit high on the circle of the receiver.
With the rifle held steady in a vise, remove the screws that hold the mount to the rifle. Holding the scope and mount to the rifle, turn the mount down, to the left a bit and the scope should line up with the barrel.
Solution is to drill and tap new holes in the rifle, at the proper location, a quarter inch either forward or back, of the old holes.

I'm just amazed that a scope mount they sell is marketed as not being over the bore and might interfere with the bolt handle

I repeat. There is nothing wrong with the design, or otherwise, of the scope mount.
Someone has DRILLED THE HOLES IN THE RIFLE IN THE WRONG PLACE!

You don't mean they had to READ THE DIRECTIONS do you? That's just not a guy thing! :D

I wonder how many rifles have had the holes drilled wrong for just that, failure to read.

Yea, but it's the MANUFACTURER OF THE MOUNT STATING THAT IT'S THE WAY IT WAS DESIGNED that I'm pointing out.
I was not saying that changing the location of the tapped holes won't be of benefit.

Thank you for your suggestions gents.
H4831, i did as you suggested, i can't slide to mount down too far before it contacts a pin that protudes from the receiver, it'll maybe slide down 1/8 of an inch, nowhere near enough to center the scope, or to cure the bolt interference. So i don't think re-drilling the holes is an option. And i did notice the warning, written in very small type, on the back of the bag that the mount came in, they do warn about the bolt interference/scope centering problem. In typical guy fashion, i disregarded that! Should have paid attention to the fine print. Dogger
