Hey everybody, my uncle recent gave me a savage 340b that was my grandfathers. Its in good shape, has a scope with the unique mounting bracket but its missing hardware and the mag. Ive looked around with no luck finding any, anyone have any suggestions? I live in the toronto area and dont know of many gun shops. I am also unclear on the caliber of the rifle.. my uncle told me it was a 270, but online im seeing 30-30, .22. The only markings on the rifle are the Savage 340B, no caliber markings.

Any help is much appreciated,
mherold.

Have you looked for a caliber marking under the wierd mount?

Also, they only came in 30-30, 223, 222 and 22 Hornet.

If the diameter of the pipe is real small you can rule out the 30-30.

Take it to a gunsmith and he can most likely tell you what caliber it's in real quick.

Can you describe the mount? Side mount I'm guessing?

Had one in 30-30 but it didn't have a mag as they are tube fed.

Are you sure that you have the model number right?

The Savage Model 170 was a pump action with a tube mag.

The Savage bolt action 340B's in 30-30 are quite common and the caliber will be stamped under the scope mount. The side mount is most likely a Weaver and parts should be available.

The 340B is an updated version of the 325B..and it was also sold in Canada by CIL as the model 830

Because its a Savage with the "easy as hell" barrel nut which allows barrel changes quite easily, any chance it could be a rebarrel, hence the caliber-less barrel designation??
Looks nice, I am currently looking for one just for a woods gun. I can't imagine it would be able to be chambered in .270 as thats not a rimmed round and the bolt would need to be altered greatly if its even possible.
If you find out the caliber, I'd try Western Gun Parts out of Edmonton. I have gotten several clips from obscure guns from them. Quick and painless.

maybe it is a new barrel, that would make sence. Ive checked and doubled checked there is no other markings... I have the name of a gunsmith so I suppose that will be my next bet.. thanks for the help

See if you can find a date code on the receiver somewhere, it'll be a small oval with a number and a letter inside of it.

Gimme that and I'll have a look in the catalog from that year. It'll narrow down the caliber (factory options anyways). If it's been rebarreled you'll have to get a smith to make a cast probably. Funny that even if it was rebarreled that they wouldn't still mark it with the new caliber, kinda dangerous.

Condur, Savage has never made a centerfire lever rifle with a mag tube.

I recently owned one of these guys and bought a spare clip from a local gunsmith - I've also used Sulphur many times to make a cast of a chamber
to identify or at least get a clue to the cartridge - I would think a trip to the local gunsmith is the answer -

I have a 340D in .222rem, good little gun for coyotes, I'm in the process of modifing a stevens stock for it to make it lighter. If you find out that your rifle is a 30-30, then Gobels in london has a clip sitting on there wall for it.
I also think that westerngunparts.com has cips for the .222rem.

they also were chambered in 225 Winchester...the only chamberings that would share a bolt face would be the 222 and 223......

i see a small oval with SP and another very small circle that i think says 8E right directly under it.

Thats the date code, it was made in 1953.

Only chambered for 30-30 in 53, and there was the 342 in 22 Hornet. Now seeing as yours has 340 on it we can rule out the 22 Hornet and were left with the 30-30. I'd still take it to a smiths though and get him to double check it. I still think it's been rebarreled if it doesn't have a barrel address.

225 Winchester

The 225 was only listed in Winchester model 70 rifles no other manufacturer ever listed a 225. The last year Winchester listed this chamberiong was 1972
