A friend of mine bought a Savage 64 FXP for sale from Cabela's for around $150. I know that you get what you pay for but he is having some issues with it and I just wanted to see if anyone else out there had similar issues or corrective actions.

Right out the box every second round was not firing. Looking at the back of the round it seems like the pin is just barely hitting it. I had read on the reviews for the gun to make sure to shoot 40 grain rounds which is all my friend has been using. We have tried multiple kinds of ammo now and both of us are convinced it has nothing to do with the type of ammo, just seems like the pin is not making a solid strike. We thought maybe it just needs to get broken in. But he has put close to 500 rounds down it now and still has yet to make it through a 10 round magazine with out any issues. He came close today having a few times where he got 9 successful shots off, so it is getting better but still not ideal. He has not tried taking it apart and giving it a good cleaning yet which is the next step. If anyone has any other suggestions or have encountered the same issue please let me know.

Also, would temperature have anything to do with a semi-auto .22 having issues? It hasn't been cold cold, but around -6 to -10 or so.

The gun is accurate and the scope that it came with isn't half bad. All in all not a bad deal for $150 I guess but hoping to solve this issue.

Sounds to me like it just needs a cleaning and a light lube. The firing pin may be moving slowly in some factory preservative shmoo.

Look at YouTube for disassembly videos. It's not hard but there are multiple fasteners to deal with.

As for getting what you paid for, I think you got a great deal. The scope and rings are likely crap -- at least that's been my experience with rifle and scope combos -- but the rifle should be a fine performer after you get it cleaned up.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I bought that rifle during Black Friday for $150. Since i’m New to shooting I took it to the range with 36 grain golden bullets. Had a not so fun time dealing with loading issues. I learned that I should have cleaned the gun thoroughly before shooting it. I got home and took it completely apart and cleaned it. Tried the 36 again and would still have issues cycling through. Just got the 40 grain (thunderbolt) in and had no issues cycling through 30 rounds. No hiccups. I did file all three mags down and certain parts. (YouTube it) I also took small plastic pieces and glued them to the bottom mag piece where the bullets sit. I found that by the 10th bullet it was sitting horizontal vs in a upward position. After the plastic was added it sat better. Some good tips on YouTube.

Try the 'matchstick mod' to your magazines. Made a world of difference and did not have to file the magazines down.
