Ordered the Savage 64FXP from Cabela’s during the Black Friday sale. Just received it today and first thing I noticed was the scope lens cover clear lens one was shattered the yellow lens still intact. I then tried to install the scope and the scope rings are for a 1” rail while the savage is a 0.5inch rail. I then took a closer at the scope and noticed that it’s a Weaver 3-9x40 model#849900. I checked the site again and the scope I was supposed to get is a 4x32mm. (Thinking it’s a Tasco).

My question is should I return this or is the scope they mistakingly gave me better then the 4x32, and I should just buy new rings to fit the rifle?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. New to shooting.

There was a recent upgrade to the FXP package. They originally came with a 4 x 32 Tasco scope with 3/8 dovetail rings and dovetail groove on the receiver. A couple months ago, Savage omitted the dovetail groove, and then drilled and tapped the receiver in turn now coming with a Weaver 3-9 x 40. These are the new series of FXP, so you do know for sure that you got a newly made rifle. Also, there was a slight issue with the rings originally provided with the rifles. I cannot remember what the fix was however. I missed the Black Friday sale myself!

Ok. After just reading this again, I have a quick question for you. Is your receiver drilled and tapped for Weaver bases, or is it milled with a dovetail groove? It almost sounds like you got a dovetail grooved receiver with the upgraded scope and rings, which could have happened as the line was switching over.

Google the two scope models and compare prices.
Sounds like the Weaver is the entry Kaspa model.
Too bad it wasn't the Classic.

Ask them to supply the proper rings to make this combo werk.

I would personally just get a cheap set of dovetail rings and keep the Weaver scope. You can call Cabelas. Ours here saw the problem so installed and boresighted the scopes.

Reason I personally would keep it is that it is a variable power scope. The previous ones had a fixed 4x Tesco scope. So it sounds to me that you got one of the transitional ones.

Yeah decided to just order new rings from amazon that will work on this scope and gun. Should get them on Wednesday. Thanks for your help. Definitely like the variable vs fixed.

My scope came with rings attached to it but they also included an other set of tesco rings in a plastic pack

p.s. The included additional tesco rings fit the Savage 64 fxp.Did you check all the boxes?

Was your FXP drilled and tapped for Weaver mounts or does it have a dovetail groove? Or by some stupid chance, does it have both?

Either way, they're a great little plinker. I am not one to play with and mod guns, but I did do something to this one. I did the 'matchstick mod' to the magazine, and it is great. No regrets at all, and 5 minutes of time.

I looked at the box. No additional hardware included to make the scope fit the rifle. By Wednesday I’ll have proper rings.

I did notice that the box “inspected by” label was broken. So maybe they took those rings out to make another package whole

Cabela's has been replacing the old rings that required the rear elevator be removed with new rings that do not require it to be removed. Likely the procedure consists of opening the box, removing the old rings and replacing with the Tasco rings. It's entirely possible the employee that did this was not gun savvy and did not notice that your rifle was the older version. If you go to a local Cabela's and ask, I bet they would just give you the proper set of Tasco rings.

@blastattack Your probably right. But the local Cabela’s is 2 hrs away. Would cost more in gas then buying new rings. Which I just got in the mail. Seem to fit well. Hoping to shoot it this Saturday for the first time. Looking to file the mags down around the edges to prevent hiccups. Also looking to try the match stick mod.
