hey everyone, im in a bit of a delema here. i want to get a semi auto rimfire and cant decide between the savage 64G or the ruger 10/22.

the savage is a lot cheaper than the 10/22 so im leaning towards that choice.

pros and cons of each rifle would be greatly appreciated.:D

thanks,

Jon

I've got two WInchester/Cooey 64's. Seem to be basically the same rifle as the savage version and both of them haven't let me down. Never used a 10/22 tho.

Its a hard call when you are just looking at price. They are both time proven designs that have been around quite some time. The savage is great if you are budget minded and just want to go out plinking. The ruger is nicer if you want to tinker around with as everybody and their dog makes accessories for it. Being such it is a much better platform if you want to get serious about target shooting. I also am a big fan of the rotary magizine that the ruger has. I have used the savage and found the rifle seems to feel much cheaper as well. I picked the ruger and haven't regretted it yet.

Well stated Wobbles. I have never used a 64 but have been the proud owner of a 10/22 for 19 years and it has never let me down. As Wobbles say the rotary mag is an excellent system and with the wealth of aftermarket goodies you can't go wrong. I have not souped mine up, but I am considering purchasing an aftermarket hammer/trigger/sear kit to improve the trigger pull. Don't get me wrong the factory trigger is bad - it just could be better.

Hey there
Ive done the same thing I bought a marlin cause it was cheaper.
A year later i bought a 10/22 save the 200 or whatever you throw into the savage and buy the ruger. It is well worth it. Plus you can mod it.
I wish i would have bought one a long time ago.
Serious dont buy it cause its a little cheaper. You will always know you settled.

Ive known a lot of guys with 10/22s over the years and all have worked great. BUT....i bought a brand new 40th annaversary last year and its been a jamming piece of sh#t since i took it out of the box. I have an old lakefield(same as savage 64) that works better and is just as accurate. So my ruger just sits there looking fancy

I vote for the Savage. :)
It's a rifle you don't need to modify.

But see if there is anyway you can try both, and decide for yourself.

my buddy has the 10/22 and ive shot it on many occasion. the one thing about his rifle in particular is that i have yet to get thru a 25 rnd mag without a missfeed. thats why i was looking into the savage 64G as an alternate to purchasing the 10/22.

i read that the quick lip mags can attribute to feeding problems and that the steel lip mags are far better. im thinking that my buddies gun needs a steel lip mag to solve the feeding problem. what 25rnd mags are the best?

anyway, it seems the majority of you guys are rooting for the 10/22 over the savage. so i think im now leaning more in that direction.

The only reason this thread is leaning towards the 10/22 so far is because every god danmed person, and his dog, (as was previously stated) on this forum owns a 10/22.

I vote for the Savage, owned a 10-22. While a lot of people enjoy to put money out to modifly thier 10-22, I have a little different point of view. The 10-22 has NO last shot bolt open and the mag release position sucks big time, the Bolt hole open lever also poor desigh to make you feel not user freindly. Mine is a supper lemon and I don't want a further story. I sold it after three months. Trigun

I'd go for a 10/22. Mine has been flawless. I've added a few mods to make the rifle more 'functional'. They are bolt buffer, extended mag release, VQ hammer and auto bolt release. The bolt doesn't lock open after the last round but this hasn't been an issue for me and, if it were, there's a mod to address it as well. I've got two steel lips magazines for the 10/22 and I have not run into any problems with misfeeding. Are you even able to get 25 round mags for the Savage? I bought the 10/22 because many of my friends have one, and one was a jam-o-matic that took a $50 trip to the 'smith to fix. Your decision should depend on what you want to do with your rifle and which one you like the 'fit and feel' of best. Both are fine choices but the 10/22 has more potential if you want to go that route.

Well I had both a Cooey 64B (same as the Savage 64) and a Ruger 10/22. I had way more problems with the Cooey not feeding than I ever did with the Ruger. The little knob on the Cooey bolt was a pain to pull back, and the "push the knob in" safety was retarded. It was accurate, but I spent a lot of time fiddling with it to feed. My Ruger has been pretty good. Everyone talks about the mods that you can do to them, some say they are good and some say they are bad. The point is you can if you want, but you don't have to. I put in a new hammer and a bolt buffer that ran me about $30 and made a big difference. Through a basement flood I ended up getting a new stock from insurance and I got a Boyd's Ross Thumbhole. I've been very impressed with the accuracy of the gun (for a semi) and it functions fine. Yeah, everyone has a 10/22, but it seems like everyone has a Remington 700 or a Winchester 70 too. The good thing is you can make it your own or you can shoot it as is. Out of the box it will shoot as well as the Savage, but if you want to make it shoot better you can. There is no way to make your Savage shoot better then it does when you buy it because there are no accessories out there for it.

I too own a 10/22,a friend of mine owns the savage. He has been having extraction problems, cant empty the magazine without a jam,and has been trying different ammo. The 10/22 has never jammed with any ammo I have used, plus the ruger looks better, and you do have more options if you need to.

I bought a 64 first because of the price and ended up buying a 10/22 later anyways
64 is a good gun but it only collects dust now as I always use the 10/22

ok fellas,

i went to the shop about 1 hr ago and picked up a 10/22 + a 25 rnd mag.

thanks for all the input, it helped me out greatly with making my decision.:D

The 10-22 is the best semi auto .22 rimfire ever made, from the durability and reliability standpoint. Buy quality magazines and you are set.

The old Cooey 64's are notorious for going full auto when they have seen a few thousand shots, which can be fun if you know it is coming. I imagine Lakefield and savage have improved the trigger .The Canadian made Win. 490 was also famous for going full auto after a few thousand rounds.
