Savage 8mm Mag?

You will need to find the longer mag box and follower (not so easy, maybe direct from Savage?). Then the action will need to get milled to fit. Not a biggie if you have the know how or $$$$.

consider the Dakota type magnums. Same case volume but shorter OAL so it will fit in a reg. magnum action.

Savage did make a run of RUM based actions which are a no brainer to fit for the longer magnums.

As much as I love Savages, for a build like this, I would lean towards a HOWA or Rem. SOOOO much easier.

I can still offer you a barrel :)

Thanks for all the info guys. It was the Shilen site that got me thinking about the 8mm Mag Jerry, I wanted something different but wanted to be able to do it myself on a Stevens/Savage action. I could go and buy a 300 Ultra Mag in a Remington SPS which would give me the longer reciever needed to complete this project but I just don't want to have to deal with having the work done by a gunsmith.

I am sure I will look at the Shilen site a few hundred more times and come up with something. Believe it or not I want a rifle that hits hard, extremely hard and is a little different than what everyone else is using. Currently I have a 6.5 swedish mauser for deer, and a Savage 99 308 which I use as a bush gun for deer/moose. I was looking to build something interesting for long range moose hunting, and as good as the 300 Win Mag is, its far to common to suffice my need for something different.

Thanks again for the info guys

OS, I would look at the Dakota family of cases. Take a RUM case and shortern it to fit in a stand mag action. The case volume is similar to the WBY/STW/8mag and performance is excellent.

Shilen should offer these chambers. The 340Dakota would hit like a 340 wby. That's very potent.

You can also look for 375Ruger variants. Not as big but should work with little to no mods of the mag/follower. A Win mag case without the belt.

The 375 Steyr case is also interesting. Pretty close to the Ruger I believe.

There are so many wildcats out there to choose from but you still have to make it run through an action.

In a hunting barrel length, there is very little velocity gain going bigger then a WBY/STW type case volume.

Enjoy choosing your perfect chamber.

Get Jerry to send you a barrel chambered for 358 Norma Mag. It answers every one of those desires.

Believe me, when I tell you that a 250 gr spitzer at 2900 fps is a long range moose outfit, par excellence!

As well, if you ever decide to sell it, it will be gone in a heartbeat. Ever notice how few 358 Normas you see for sale, and when you do find one and inquire, it's already gone? :runaway:
