I have been playing with the torque settings on the action screws of my rifle and have found that 25 inlbs produced the best accuracy. Problem is that the forward receiver area contacts the stock while the forward receiver pillar is floating above the stock. As I increase the torque setting I am bending the receiver. I decided to bed the rifle to eliminate this bending.
A problem with these Savage stocks is that they are too aggressively inleted. The forward receiver action pillar does not sit fully on the stock. I glued a small piece of hardwood in this area.

The gap between the bottom of the receiver pillars and the stock was about 3/32 of a inch. I glued washers as spacers to the stock where the action screws go through the stock.

With a bit of sanding the barrel and receiver were no longer contacting the stock. I then wrapped a section of the barrel and the receiver with masking tape to center things in the stock. I bedded the forward part of the receiver and the first four inches of the barrel, and the last inch of the reciever. The Bedding ended up looking like this:

The flimsy Savage bottom metal was replaced by 1/8 inch stainless steel. This longer piece accepts both action screws and the small wood screw is eliminated.
