Bought a brand new savage .17 HMR, fired the first 5 rounds easily enough. Reloaded the magazine and then the bolt wouldn’t close. Pretty new to guns, any ideas what would cause this. It almost seems to me that the extractor claws or whatever they are called aren’t seating in the recessed slots in the barrel. Forgive me if I don’t have the right part names.

Hi Rustman.

First thing is do not force anything.

Remove the bold and have a look into the chamber to make sure nothing is blocking it.
If you post pictures it can be helpful.

I have a similar or same rifle - Savage 93R17 - chambered in 17 HMR - in this one's case, the bolt strips a round from the magazine and about 90% of the time the tip of the bullet runs into rear of barrel, BELOW the chamber - something is a bit off as far as that alignment - but if you are not real familiar - maybe that is what is happening to yours? And I have similar rifle in 22 Mag, so is about 4 or 5 magazines here - does same for all with the 17 HMR - all magazines work perfectly in the 22 Magnum. As per the Savage ads, and the one "new in package", the two rifles use the same Savage magazine.

I got it all sorted out. I suspect a round broke open while attempting to chamber. There was a substantial amount of unspent powder present. Once cleaned, I was back in business. No issues at all.
