Need some help, I acquired a savage 250-3000 from my uncle who has passed on and I am really into the old rifles. Wondering if anyone could help me with some info on figuring out the year of manufacture date. The serial # is 278791 stamped on bottom of action and also on butt and fore stock. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Dates to 1925, as such in 250-3000 it could be in a number of configurations.
Is it checkered or not, straight grip or pistol, "Model 1899" stamped into reciever ring or not?

Pics are nice :)

I'm sorry I can't help with the dating, but I can tell you I had a take-down '99 in .250-3000 for many years. It was dated to 1917 when I bought it, and it had some dings and wasn't what you'd call a pretty rifle. I had it converted to .250 Ackley Improved and just thought it a wonderful rifle. I don't hunt any more, and I sold the rifle years ago, but it stays in my mind.

Can't help you on vintage, but some of those apparently will shoot 87 grain bullets really accurately and not with 100 gr. bullets due to rate of twist.

The 1-14 Twist will shoot 100gr Speer as they are the shortest bullet available in that weight. At least mine will. The old Dominion 100KKSP went into one hole but no longer available................Harold**** been #####in at Hornady to make their 87gr in a deer bullet instead of varmint. It will kill deer on broadside lung shots but stay away from the shoulder area....Speer's 87 gr works well on deer

Seniors got it, only thing I can add is it a solid frame or take down?

Barrel length helps as well.
