Would any of you smiths here be able to tell me if the 284 bolts were a different size from the other calibers the 99C's were offered in (308,243, 250-3000). I have a problem (which was brought up here before) about my 99C in 284 which opens the action after every shot and lever jams so I can't eject the shell.

One guy told me it had to do with the tang safety but I can't see the safety having anything to do with holding the bolt closed while firing the gun.

I did however notice that the hammer bushing screw head was buggered which made me aware that someone that wasn't a smith had been toying around with that bolt. I was thinking of starting there and replacing the bolt but I need a part number for the 284 breech bolt or a place I can get one, thanks.

Well DOGG I'm not a smith but I don't see why a 308 bolt would be any diff than a 284?? I would think as long as they both tang safetys I would feel confident in saying they were the same. It sounds to me like some-one has fired an extreme over-load in the gun, causeing some excess slop in the linkage were normally the camming action would hold it closed.

BUT like I said I'm not a smith, so take it for what it's worth :D

Western just got back to me, they gave me a part number but don't have one in stock, there is an A on the part number for the 284 bolt at the end of the number designating it as a 284 bolt so maybe there was a difference, if I can't find the bolt I'm gonna throw the 308 bolt in anyways and see what happens.

The lord hates a coward. Maybe a fingerless coward but what the hell.

The .284 had a rebated rim? That doesn't make it any different than a .308 rim in diameter? I don't know just curious. If the rim diameter and thickness is the same I think you should be good to go.

cheers Darryl

Yes but I just checked & the rim dia is the same as standard 308, it's the case itself that is bigger, therefore I can see no reason a standard 308 bolt would be any diff??

You two are aguing over the same fact, the 308 bolt should work correct?

I think I'm gonna give it a go, maybe get my smith to do it just to be sure.

Hey I'll only argue till you admit I'm right ;)
You have the 284 bolt & it only takes a minute dis-ass a 99, why don't you lay them side by side & compare?
I still have a feeling your problem is not the bolt thou!
Easy to slip another bolt in & see if problem persists.

Thinking about changing the lever to but it doesn't feel like the lever bite is n't setting, there's no slop in the lever and it starts to tighten up about an inch away from the reciever.

Maybe I'll change both and see what I get.

I have a couple of levers if you need one.
As for the bolt, there should be no difference between the 2.
My guess is that Savage stuck the A designation on a bunch of bolts that were earmarked to be 284's.

Thanks Chris, just heard back from K&E as well, they say that their books don't designate any other numbers for the bolts on the 99's.

Might be nothing or it might be that they're the wrong year of parts books.
