Savage 99 300 load data

Hey guys, I just bought myself a Savage 99 in 300 Savage and was wondering if any of you have worked up some good loads for them ?? Everything I have read so far states that it's close in performance to a 30-06, but runs at pressures well below that of a 308.:confused:

While it is a good cartridge it doesn't come close to the 30-06.

Performance is somewhat below the 308 but a fair bit above the 30-30.

Out of your '99 expect 2200-2300 fps with a 180 grain bullet and 2400-2500 fps with a 150.

I prefer the 150 grain bullets in the 300 savage. The best powders so far have been Reloader 15 and IMR 4064. Poorest accuracy I had was with IMR 3031 and IMR 4895.....likely there will be someone here that will have the opposite opinion.
 
As for performance, 'not even close' is in the eye of the beholder. You are looking at several 100 feet per second under the '06 and even the 308. However, a deer, moose, or elk getting hit correctly at mid range distances with a 300 savage is done.

I prefer the 150 grain Hdy interlocks or Sierra 150 grain GameKings. Fired at the moderate velocity from a 300 savage they are not all that frangible. I have recovered several slugs from game and the performance was very good. The GameKings are particularly accurate in my 99.
 
I like the Hornady 150 gr. SST and Reloader #15 in my Sav. 99 in 300 Sav. MV runs about 2400 fps on the chrono,nothing I've ever shot with that load has complained.

I shoot more cast bullet loads in the rifle than jacketed. The Lee .314 TL-SWC sized to .311 behind 3.0 grs. of Bullseye is a great little plinker/small game load. For a heavier load one of the Lee 150 or 170 gr. gas checked RNFP or another similar equivalent bullet with a nice meplat loaded to 1800 to 2100 fps. does the job nicely on deer size game.
 
Had one and it shot 1/2" groups at 100 yards with 42gr Win 748/150gr, 41gr Win 748/165gr + 40gr Win 748/180gr.A dob of glass bedding at the fore end tip and use the screw to play with tension..........Harold
 
150 or 165 grain bullet and imr 4064 has always performed well in most of the 99's I have owned. Generaaly they would do 3 shot groups in the 1" range or just under. Watch some of the older data--some of the max loads are a bit hot especially when used during summer months.
