Will my .308w lever gun fire 7.62x39 safely? Just seeing that cheap surplus ammo out in the world was curious if my gun would fire it safely. Will the lacquer coating cause problems in those rounds as well?

NO!

They are 2 totally different cartridges.
If you want to shoot surplus ammo in your model 99 you will need to find some 7.62x51 NATO ammunition.

blasted saber beat me to it by seconds!

You should be ok with 7.62 x 51 nato. I know my .308 will fire it just fine, as will most. Others here may know if a Savage 99 can.

Corrosive primers are ringed in purple (or so ive been told, I may be wrong, ive never used them).

if you were to put the 2 rounds side by side, you'd see a VAST difference in case length- and the russian 7.62 is not the same as ours in bullet diameter either, even though the numbers look the same- ours is a .308 diameter, theirs typically is somewhere about a .311- they don't make the 99 anymore, so if you do anything drastic, you'll never replace it- btw , you still get spare mags for it if you have one of the mag types- and i have used 7.62 x51 nato in mine- it doesn't like it very well b/c of the bullet weight- performs much better with 308/165 or 308/180

Its an internal rotary so no spare clips for me. Ive just been using 150gr. and it bucks harder than my 12 gauge, maybe i'm just a wuss. Light gun with a not so long barrel. Inherited through the family.

there are these things called slip-on recoil pads- couple that with a past shoulder pad, ( which i wear most of the time in the bush) and that calms the bucker - but i run 5;8 and 250, and LEAN INTO the shot- lots of guys these days start just by shouldering the rifle and not putting their weight behind it- there was a drill we used to do in basic- you shouldered the rifle, then the corp or d.i, used to come around and either remove the rifle or push against it- if you almost fell over, you were doing it correctly- turnipseed has turned this into a money maker

Asking about shooting 7.62x39mm in a Savage 99 .308 Win???

NAA.

get a good recoil pad if u are sensitive to recoil. keep in mind u r shooting a light round for hunting. many shoot things with more than twice the recoil u r experiencing. anything capable of killing a moose is bound to buck a bit, hold her tight and forget about the recoil...unless u don't mind being a sissy who flinches. not trying to be a ####, only trying to give u a different perspective...pissing and moaning about it will not do u any good, it's u against that gun, let us know who wins.:D

i shot a lot of ivi and some austrian surplus 308 out of my savage with no ill effects. wasn't always the most accurate but used to be cheap.

I have an early 99 in 308 like NAA's and it doesn't like 7.62X51 either must be a throat issue. My Rem 700 in .223 doesn't like 5.56 either, maybe these older rifles don't like new schit just like us oldtimers!
