I have a Savage 99c and am wondering what I can do for this fine rifle to tweak the accuracy. I have done nothing yet to the trigger and the old girl is currently wearing a scope. Handloading for it and currently working up loads for Varget, Rel 15 and IMR4064 for Hornady Interbond 150 and Nosler Accubond 150. Its in relatively newish condition with no cracks or wear and 100% blueing.
Should I be looking at a new trigger?

Not trying to hijack this thread (I am also about to purchase a 99c and I was wondering what the typical accuracy that could be expected from a 99 with .308 ammo)
And what kinds of tips people who were adept at using them had for increasing the accuracy of them. Hopefully this is still along the same lines as the original post and not gonna seem hijack-like in its nature!!)

Hate to do this to a possible collector gun but glass bedding just the fore-end tip and then playing with the fore-end screw to change barrel pressure works fine and is an old tweaking trick.Any I've fixed shot less than MOA with preferred handloads.........Harold ..PS ........3/4 throttle loads shoot best so don't load it like you would a bolt action

I've heard the factory triggers can be worked into a good pull. I don't know if aftermarket triggers are available anyway.
My .250 responded favourably to some cloth hockey tape in the barrel channel; the forend had been loose and rattly. It went from 2 MOA to sub-MOA immediately. Also, as with most lever rifles, when you shoot, set the forward part of the receiver into the sandbag, not the forend.

I just read something from John Barsness the other day to the effect that 99's are usually very accurate because they use a good stiff barrel, deeply threaded into the receiver, and a forend that applies little stress. Makes sense to me.

I purchased one last year in 308, I havent had it to the range much but I have shot a box of factory ammo through it. It was more accurate than i thought it would be, about 1.5" and that was a rest off the the hood of my truck at a distance of about 70 yds. I reloeded some ammo, IMR 4064 I believe with 150 gr hornady spire points and shot groups about 1.5 or better 5 shot groups at 100 yds. I think you will be surprised with its accuracy, enjoy it. cheers Pete

It is unlikely a 99c 308 will become a collectors item but its a hunting gun not part of a collection. Read a bunch of stuff online but its all over the place and one contradicts the other.
