I'm looking for some input on a gun I'm considering buying. It is a Savage model 99 lever action in .308 cal, in very good condition. The guy is asking 425.00 dollars canadian for it. I'm thinking 400.00$, (a nice round number!!!)

What does this gun normally go for? Am I paying too much?

Found this site while browsing for pricing on this gun, glad I found it.

Thanks for your help.

If not already, sign onto the Equipment exchange forums. You'll see a few in there that will give you a good idea.

Sounds like a good deal from your description!!!

What model 99 is it? Is it a rotary mag. or a clip fed? The 99 in the rotary mag. are wonderfull rifles. Bolt action accuracy with semi auto speed.

Thanks Steeleco, I requested the equipment echange forum but am still waiting to "get in".

Win/64 I think it is a model C, not too sure though. It belongs to a guy from an atv club I belong to so all I've seen are some photos.

The Model "C" is the clip fed version.....Great rifle and the price of $400.00-$425.00 sound fair for both parties if it is in nice condition.

I like the clip versions for the type of hunting we do here on the prairies.
We do a lot of road and small bush / slough bottom hunting therefore we are in and out of the vehicles often. This makes a clip fed rifle a valuable option.

Buy it and enjoy it.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's TSE? $300 for a scoped F sounds too good to be true.

I thought so too. It looked to be in decent shape... 308 - even came with a leather sling!

The gent behind the counter said it was on consignment and had been there for a while. I did not check out the bore...

Looked at this Savage 99 today what a POS. I realize it is used but the condition was horrendous, cracked stock, the barrel needed rebluing, I wiped the inside of the chamber with my finger and it came of black and carrying dust bunnies! . I told the guy I do him a favour and give him 100$ for it and he got mad and left.

Now I'm thinking of a 30/06 or a 300 win mag. from stevens because of their price. OR the 30/06 single shot from NEF. Most of my hunting will be white tails in the bush, but I want to do some bear, moose and caribou hunts in the future.

Any thoughts on these two calibers?

Here is my $0.02 cents worth on the 30-06 and the 300 Win Mag.

If you want to go to a long action then go with the 300 Win Mag, you might as well get some knock-down power out of your rifle. I shoot a 300 Win Mag in an A-bolt and this is a great caliber for deer and larger.

The 300 Win Mag will cost you a bit more to shoot unless you are a reloader.

I would not spend money on the 30-06 because of the long action. You can get the same preformance out of a 308 and still have a short action rifle.

I like your thinking on the Stevens rifles though....everything you hear and read is very positive about them.

I appreciate your input Hornhunter, and to tell you the truth I don't know the difference between long and short action unless it has to do with how far back the bolt goes loading a new round. If this is the case my P-14 would be an extremly long action. In any event I don't plan on firing the thing like a machine gun when I hunt, thats why I was looking at single shots. One shot, one kill is my moto. I don't need a fast follow up shot because if I can't make a good clean first shot, I won't take it.

Hi Turbo. A Savage 99 is a dandy rifle no matter how it's fed. Have cash in your hand. Four Robert Borden's speaks loudly.
