Here is an oddball for ya... my buddy stopped in today and showded me a rifle that he picked up this weekend from an family estate in Killalou Ont... it is chambered in .270 savage..(nope not a typo:confused::confused:)
the rifle appears to have have started life as a 99 takedown in 300 savage and some one reworked a 250 sav barrel on to her and opened it up to .277

the old girl came with some reworked .300 brass and an old set of lyman dies for their small turret press of old....the only data that came with the gun calls for 39 grs of HV-2 and a 100 gr pill.....
Anyone remember HV-2 or it's eqivilent..... maybe 3031??? or 4064???

the only info i can find so far on the cartridge is that it was made in the states by a gunsmith from herber city utah...Titus???

any help would be great in trying to get her going again

thanks

I think the gunsmith would have been Bliss Titus. I've seen a couple like it and another similar one that went by a different name. Yours may be called the 270 Titus but I can't recall what the other name was. They may even have been identical but just promoted by different makers. Don't have any data at hand for either unfortunately. I'll do some checking around and see what I can find.

It's a pretty good little cartridge within it's limitations of case capacity as I recall. Some people complained about the short neck but it's really no more so than the parent cartridge and short of machine guns the 300 Savage worked fine in a lot of different actions.

Roy Dunlaps bok on gunsmithing has a cartridge and chamber drawing of it and some encouraging comment about performance using the powders of the day. My old Lyman books have HV2 data for the 300 Savage as well as some other powders but I think you are going to have to either find some one with Quick Load who can give you some starting loads or find a book dedicated to reloading wildcats. If you have Cartridges of the World that publication sometimes included loading data although it is likely to be quite dated too.

From Dunlap I infer that Titus made and/or rebored barrels himself.

jim: The data mauser 98 provided is exactly what you need with a bit of caution. Loads using 4831 in that book are probably arrived at with original military powder. It was quite slow burning. I think H4831 comes closest to the burn rate of that powder but tell your friend to work up with it cautiously. IMR4831 loads should be reduced somewhat below minimum prior to work up of loads as it is faster than H4831.

Good point, Stocker

I remember when IMR4831 came on the market back in the 70's. it caused a bit of excitement among us H4831/270 Win shooters.

Also, keep in mid the 4350 in the .270 Savage data refers to IMR4350, not H4350.
