I bought a 99 last night chambered in 22 Hi-power (dated 1914). The only mechanical problem with it is the rotary mag - there's no tension in it (broken spring?). Since this is the first 99 I've owned, can anyone direct me to a site with disassembly and (most importantly :D ) reassembly steps.
Or if anyone has (or knows where I can get) a replacement buttstock, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know (the stock on it has a toe repair with finish nails, and a fiber board homemade butt plate  )

Anyone know of anyone in Canada that carries 5.6x52R Sellior & Bellot ammo?

You can try e gunparts for the spring, they might have one but the buttstock you'll have to go to Boyds for, gonna be hard finding a vintage peice to replace it with.

Not sure who sells the ammo, thats about the only 99 caliber I don't have.

Sellor&bellot ammo is about $14 a box.Ask your local gun shop>I am sure they sould be able to get it for you.

Killer, if you remove the forearm, you will see the front of the rotary mag right there. on the side of the reciever, at the front you will see a little screw, it has a pin that keeps that whole rotor assembly from spinning freely in the mag. If you carefully hold that rotor by the large screw it rotates on while removing the small pin screw from the reciever, you will be able to spin the rotor once the little screw is out. This will let you know whether or not the spring is in fact broken or not. Don't rotate it too much though!

There are a series of grooves in line with the circumference of the piece you are holding, to allow you to wind up the spring more, or less.
It may be a case of the action being gummed up and just needing some TLC to clean it. The big screw that the rotor spins on is left hand thread IIRC.
They are very easy to dissasemble.

If you have a digital camera, take a bunch of shots during tear down. Or do like I do, tear it apaart, but it in a box and forget about it for a year and then attempt reasssembly.

As for the stocks, how bad is yours? It isn't all that fun to find replacement stocks out in Alberta. You might find a beater gun at Ellwod epps but most seem to be cracked at the tang. Perhaps if you deem it worthy, call gunstock inc and pull out your sandpaper and go to it.

Hope this helps,
Noel

Or if you reload you can neck dow .30-30 cases. Hornady still makes the correct .228 bullet for the ctg, too. Dies can be found around at gunshows...

Wolf's (I think that's the name) gun repair in Edmonton had some 99 butt stocks.

Be sure to measure the tang length before buying a stock, as there was a transition to a shorter tang. MadDog would be better to say where the serial range is for that change.;)

If you are going to replace it with a new stock--check with Cary Stricker at M & S Stocking in Leader, Sask--he has patterns for many 99's. I have bought several from him over the last few years and have been satisfied--you do have to hve some woodworking skill to fit them though.

I'm not sure , if he doesn't he'll make one up if some one sends an original. Good work, good guy (except he phones me to often when he has something he knows I might want ;) )

His website is prairieclassic guns

Thanks for the info.
I hoping that it may just be a loose stock bolt that's causing the wiggle. If that tightens it up, I may just live with the toe repair and buy a butt plate for it.
Any ideas what a 99H in 22 Hi-power would be worth (very good blueing, no rust, very good bore, peep sight, and with the stock defects I mentioned)?
The only prices I can find are on the US auction sights (although I did find out that the peep sight is worth about $100 US on its own).

I sold one 2 years ago in excellent condition for 700. I might still have a handfull of brass if you want to reload for it.

I can see one in excellent condition going $700 but most of them these days and with the defects KK has mentioned it's only gonna be a $300-$400 gun. Condition is the killer most of the time. Once something has been done to an original rifle it kills the price by a minimum of 50%, even a set of aftermarket sling swivels will turn a $1000 rifle into a $500 rifle. This goes for Savage, Winchester, Marlin, etc, etc, you name it.

Thanks for the info guys. MadDog, would that be $300-400 including the Lyman tang sight, or $300-400 for the rifle alone?
I should see if I can get a couple pics and post them here (and maybe a few of the 1905 vintage model 1894 rifle in 38-55 I picked up at the same time :D )

I "probably" have some ammo, but if you can buy the S&B for $14 a box that is a bargoon. ;) I did not personally LIKE that stuff, but if it is the only game in town, well............

In Southeastern Ontario where I live, you can buy good clean Dominion or other vintage ammo for $25 to $30 per box.

If you sell the gun and can get $400 for it WITH the tang sight, I reckon you are doing well. I have owned a couple dozen 99s and 1899s, so I have a slight idea what I am talking about. Some days.....:p
