Hi all.

I have a few questions about rebarreling a savage model 99e. I believe the serial puts its manufacture around 55 or so. Anyways it's in 243 win right now.

I want to rebarrel it in 260 rem and want good accuracy. Talking sub Moa.

Anybody familiar with the savage 99's, does the fore end attach to the barrel? I want to free float the barrel. Thinking krieger feather weight contour would get me the accuracy I'm after.

I also want to be able to return it to factory if I so desire.

Is this an achievable endeavour?

Can't free float the barrel, the fore end attaches with a screw. You can re-bore to .260, just by sending it to someone who can do that work ( like Ron Smith) without changing anything else. Hope that helps.

Savage 99's respond well [1/2" groups at 100 yards] to a dob of glass bedding at the fore end tip. Then adjust fore end screw to get best barrel tension/harmonics.Harold...........yes they will shoot that well if tweaked.

Thanks for the tips. Its about a 2.5 moa gun right now. I haven't ran a bore scope to see the condition of everything, but I figured it was shot out. 50 year old gun thats a fairly known overbored barrel burner. Maybe I'll try tweaking it a bit.

Mbogo3, youre talking about putting a pressure point at the very front of the stock fore end then using the fore end screw to adjust harmonics? Interesting idea. Maybe I'll give that a try before I go messing with too much.

Just as Mbogo3 said, the 99 can be tweaked to give surprising accuracy. My grandfather's .300 Savage could put five rounds in just about the same hole (if he was shooting it; I was never that good). If you do re-barrel to .260, make sure you save the old .243 barrel. You could probably get a good price for it on the EE if you choose to sell it. I'm currently looking at having a shot-out .250 Savage barrel rebored to either 6.5mm/250 or .270/250. Could breathe new life into the old girl yet. I was also thinking of a nice .338 Federal in a Savage 99. That would be a fantastic all-around hunting rifle.
