Savage 99 safe?

Hello all

I have a savage 99c in 308. My father bought it from a auction 30-40 years ago. I remember him saying it was seized from a poacher. Anyway. I tried some steel cased norc ammo a couple of years ago to confirm the scope's zero, and it jammed up pretty good. Brass ammo seemed ok. Scope was toast.

Recently put a scope on it, tried it out. Do these cases look normal? I'm worried about head space or the chamber as it is an old rifle with an unknown round count.

I can't see anything wrong when looking at the picture, cases look good. As far as excessive headspace that would have to be measured with gauges but if they are similar to other cases fired in other rifles I don't bother measuring headspace. I have pre WW1 99's and they all work well. A lot depends on how a gun was used and abused. Many of these old out last the grandchildren of the original owner if used properly. Savage 99's are excellent guns. The two I have are made in 1900 and 1908 , 303 Savage and 38-55 Winchester. Both excellent shooters.

Why anyone would actually choose to use that crap in a commercial rifle is beyond me.
 
What Ganderite said. Steel is harder than brass and has little to no "give". When a brass case is heated and expands in a chamber it tends to spring back a little bit while steel cases will blow outward, press against the chamber walls and stay there while your poor extractor struggles to pull it out. Any slight imperfections like pits and rust in the chamber wall will only add to the problem.
 
I am in no way knowledgeable in this stuff but my 99 also scratches the brass up pretty good and sometimes has troubles ejecting with it. My families 99's scratch up brass real bad too. You may want to try a bit of steel wool and a good cleaning and see if your chamber is rusted at all also.
 
Yup, all of the above.

Every 99 I've had, half a dozen, has had chambers on the large side. They all headspaced within spec but the chamber diameters were larger than I feel they needed to be.

I know nothing about Norc ammo but is t possible whatever your shooting is to hot for a 99?

Savage 99 guys will always load 2 gr lower than factory specs because honestly the 99 doesn't like hot loads.

Also alot of the post one million guns especially the 99's made in Spain had head space issues, wasn't uncommon.
 
Has any one actually seen a Spanish made Savage 99?The only problem I've seen with 99's is how easy it is to fire with an unlocked breech.A lot of the used 99's I've seen have repaired badly cracks stocks from firing a round while unloading the rifle.
