I just gave a dealer a verbal "I'll take it" on a Savage 99A in .250-3000, s/n B645###. Just based on a Google search of some characteristics, it looks like it was made between 1971-76. I have some questions for any and all that may know...

- The gun has been scoped and is missing both front and rear open sights. Looking at my Gun Parts Corp. catalogue, there are a couple of variants of sight patterns. The parts aren't expensive, but I want to get the right ones the first time. There are several models listed, including the "99A series A", which is the only reference to a 99A. There is also the generic "model 99" column. Rear sight styles include leaf spring and folding blades that fit into dovetails. Front sites are dovetails that fit into integral ramps or detachable ramps that then receive a dovetail.
Anyone know which one of these I am looking for?

- As an alternative to the factory rear, are there any receiver peep sights that are currently made that would fit the existing hole pattern?

- I see a couple of internet references that quality control at Savage became spotty from the late 60's on. What types of problems should I be looking for with an early 70's rifle?

- Anyone that can tell me the precise date of manufacture, it would be appreciated.

99A

I have a 1970's 99A in .250-3000 and it is an excellant rifle. My is a later one with the 22" barrel (which I prefer). The earlier ones had a 20" tube. Mine wears a scope and has accounted for lots of game and is a pleasure to carry and shoot. I actually prefer the .250 caliber in the later 99 rifles due to the 1-10" twist barrels which work great with 100 grain bullets. Mine also does well with 75 and 87 grainers.

The rear sight on mine is a folding, adjustable blade and the front is the standard Savage brass bead that dovetails into the front ramp. No marking visible on either.

Williams amongst others makes receiver sights that fit the factory holes. If not using a scope the Ashley receiver sight appears nice and compact.

It was made in July of 1974.

If it's got a really pronounced schnobel forearm then it's a model 99A which would have come with a flip up Lyman 6A rear sight and a front ramp sight with a post.

The only reciever sight which will work is the Lyman 57SB which is made for post million Savage 99's with the tang safety. The Williams version would also fit.
