Savage 99C question

I inherited a 99C from my grandfather and I'm looking for a 99C in .243 but I want it to be the same as the one I have now. My current one was made in 1965 give or take.
What year did they get rid of the gold trigger? Also my 99 doesn't seem to have stamped checkering like I've seen in later models. Did that change at the same time they got rid of the gold trigger?

my 1971 version has the gold trigger- but it's a dl- c-dl, series a- maybe there were different "levels "of finishes, like what you get on the brownings- grade 1 is the factory engrave, grade 2 is a little more fancy, grade 3 you get into the gold inlay etc- it also had a jewelled bolt, which the half whit gunsmith i sent it to for re-blue got rid of
 
Cut checkering went in 1965, gold trigger in 1974. On the forward base of your lever attachment to the receiver will be a small oval with a letter and a number if it was made before 1970. The number is the inspector the letter will tell the year it passed inspection. If it has cut checkering that wasn't reintroduced until the mid 70's. The 99C was introduced the same year as the pressed checkering. Hope this helps.
 
Thanks for the relpies. I know my gun is a 1965 or 1966 only because on my uncles gun you can read the lever boss stamp and it is a 66. You can only read one number on my gun but my serial number is a lower number then his so it is either a 65 or 66. A lot of the 99Cs I've seen don't have the gold trigger or the pristol grip cap and the checkering doesn't seem to extend as far done the pistol grip either. It seems like if I get something prior to 74 I'm in good shape.
 
The date is never stamped, it is a code and a number. Like 10S in an oval or 10T. The 10 was the inspector and the letter was the year. It started in 1949 with A and ended in 1970 with X. O and Q were the only letters not used. If you PM me the serial number I can guess pretty closely what year it was made. All 99C's had a pistol grip, grip cap and checkering if original. Checkering style changed over the years as did wood and styles.
 
What I meant to say was my uncles stamp is clear. He has the number and then a T so it is a 1966. With mine you can only read the first number. Thats good news about the pistol grip. Will I have to pay a premium for a 243? I assume most out there are chambered in .308.
 
Just a little bit more and a bit harder to find. Most that you find are 308. They also stamped the code on the frame of the receiver but you have to remove the butt stock to see it. Not something I would recommend for just anyone to do as I have known more than one person crack their stock trying to remove it.

My first thought on reading this was ... wonder how the gunsmith likes his new " jewelled bolt " on his own 99 . hate thinking this way but they look very sharp on a rifle...
 
The marks are so fine it doesn't take too long draw filing or polishing and it is gone. I had found a article that had home jewelling in it and I have lost it. It was dead simple and only used tools that most homeowners have. It was the jig and sequence that was the neat part. I think it took longer to build the jig than to jewel the bolt.
 
Well, with all the talk I had to go and have another look at my 99c. Yup, gold trigger, and yes, that jewelled bolt is purdy. I think Maddog dated this one at 64 so that seems about right. The checkering looks rolled though-maybe it has been refinished and sanded? Odd diamond pattern and looks deeper(and dirtier)on the pistol grip. Sure is a sweet rifle and shoots like a hot damn. Just prepping a bunch of Winnie brass to pound thru the old girl. 308 is so nice to load. Mebbe I shoulda done some readin. Any books to recommend?

No 99C's in 1964, they weren't introduced until 1965.
 
Well then 99, this is what I see. Circle (kinda goofed up but a circle) has what looks like -6V in it and the SN is 11754xx.
Does not much matter to me as it is a keeper anyways. Sure is an elegant design. Just something special about the shape and it helps to be leftie friendly too.

The V would indicate you have a 1968 but that SN seems high to me. My 1965's SN is 11073xx.
