I recently aquired a Savage 99C in 308 from the father in-law. I believe it is a 1965 manufacture. Its serial number is D031022. Can anyone confirm the manufacture date on this rifle? Based on the pictures looking for a rough evaluation what it's worth. Also have a couple shotguns that I am looking to date and value. Take a look and let me know what you think.

I'm pretty sure Savage started stamping serial numbers on the side of the receiver of 99's sometime in the 1970's.
Same with using a letter prefix.

I believe Series A was used sometime around mid 1970's

The 99C however was introduced originally in 1965, but yours is a later production.

It's worth about $500.00 tops as long as it has no cracks etc.

Check the Boss Code on the inside of the lever:
A = 1949 B = 1950 C = 1951 D = 1952 E = 1953 F = 1954 G = 1955 H = 1956 I = 1957 J = 1958 K = 1959 L = 1960
M = 1961 N = 1962 P = 1963 R = 1964 S = 1965 T = 1966 U = 1967 V = 1968 W = 1969 X = 1970 Y = 1971

It was made in March 1979.

Saw some whacko pay $800 for one at auction last weekend, with juice and taxes he was looking at about $1000 for a 99C. I guess it's true, a fool and his money.....

Maddog

I agree - but how did a fool and his money ever get together to begin with ?

The govt of course! So to rephrase your question; But how did a fool and our money...

Oh and OP keep the gun, family history and all! It should be worth more than it's $400 to $500 value.

Curious where you found that info I was digging last night with no luck. Tried the lever boss stamping technique bit there is nothing on there not even faint markings. I did find what looked like a letter in a circle on the barrel but, the letter isn't very clear. I thought it was an S which is where I thought it might be 1965.

Cause I've been at it for about 15 years. I also have some great stuff from a buddy of mine that has been retired from the Savage factory since the 1980's. I think there is maybe 5 of us that have these numbers and I gave it to a couple buddies. Apparently it ended up in a new book out on the 99 so one of my "buddies" is a scumbag.

Thanks a bunch! Quick accurate answers with info to back it up is one of the reasons I stick around here!

Because MadDog is a Savage 99 Wizard. Do any internet research on the Model 99 and you will track down his posts...
