Originally my quest was to build a 10/22 Mach 2 - to make a long story short decided to purchase the Savage A17 Mach 2 instead.
I purchased a Boyds stock a few weeks ago to motivate me to purchase a A17 as soon as one came available.
I did some research on this rifle on RFC so knew that this could be an adventure as most all had troubles with the American made ones for accuracy - supposedly, the Canadian made ones have better accuracy??
Sorry I'm ahead of myself
Got a call one came in so took the plunge. Received my new A17 - changed out the stock (sanded barrel channel to ensure free floated), mounted a Zeiss Conquest and off to give this rifle a go - first pic.
Got out to the range in excited anticipation - I had to take along my 221 Fireball for those gophers that are dumb enough to venture around a shooting range
. Pic 2
A look down range - only 44 yards as wanted to save some time walking back and forth! Pic 3
Took me a few extra shots to get on paper as hit max elevation and was still roughly 8 inches below point of aim! Not off to a good start! Pic 4
Started shooting some 10 shot groups anyway - wanted to see what type of groups she would print! First impressions……..poor! Average 10 shot groups @ 2.5 inches. Pic 5
80 yard gogher with 221 FB………no words required! Pic 6
So, have some issues that need to be addressed - back home I go.
First issue - address the lack of elevation to get on target. I know my Zeiss only has 30 MOA of elevation so had a Bushnell 4200 Tactical with some Zee rings (with off set inserts) to gain an extra 20 MOA of elevation. Pic 7
Decided to remove bolt (which is way easy by the way) so I could look through barrel to see if scope elevation was good - just barely so installed a home made .020 shim to gain another bit of elevation - that did the trick. Pic 8.9
I also decided to remove Boyd’s stock and install original to see if that was the cause of the poor accuracy! Pic 10
Ran out of pic room - part 2 next.
