Well HOLY SMOKES MAN!

Here we go again! It seems savage has come out with a .17 HMR Semi-Auto, finally! (I just seen it... I know, i'm a bit behind!) And, jeez, if ya wouldnt know it, i believe i will have to have one! I love my gopher guns, and have a enough of them, as I have a Ruger 10/22 Marauder, A Ruger 10/22 T stainless, a Mossberg 715T, a Marlin 917 17M2, Savage 93 R17 BSEV, Savage BMAG Stainless HB 17WSM.

So, with that said, I dont know what to do!! Ive been keeping my eye on a Rhineland Arms R22, which, Ive always wanted, but im not too keen on another .22Lr, as I find it used less and less, not to mention the ammo is retardlely un-available! (But, the R22 would be more for the collection, i suppose);-) And, I may be able to convert it to .17 Mach2.

I dunno.... I think I will wait and see how the new Savage A17 works out over the summer, It would have to be extremely accurate for me to jump on it, as I dont need a semi auto .17 just to throw lead out there for the sake of pulling the trigger fast. It has to pop gophers at 100y as well as my BSEV, or close, at least. Amyways, I just wanted to vent a bit! How many of you are thinking the same as me? Do you NEED one as well? ;-)

If anyone here gets one, please let me know how it works out for you, please post here!

Ginnz!

any Idea when they will be available ?

Just heard about 'em back at ShotShow so probably a little while yet.

If its accurate I will be interested in one... Makes me wonder why its in 17hmr and not 17wsm though...

The one question I have is about the new ammo they made specifically for the gun. It is a bit faster... 50-100fps I think. Not sure if that extra bit of zip makes any difference though - Im worried the gun might not run flawlessly with regular ammo thats a bit slower...

Like some others, I'm waiting for accuracy/reliability reports before I even contemplate one of these. That locking bolt idea sounds like it will be the ticket (safety and accuracy) but having not seen one of these guns...I have to wonder how well that feature will work when the bolt gets dirty. Or REALLY dirty. If everything checks out and they come out with a HB version..I'll be awfully tempted.

I am a skeptic - the cases on the high speed (higher pressure) rimfires are so thin that the case would have to be held in the chamber until the pressures are low, or the case will lose it's head or at least the bottleneck will split. Splitting the bottleneck may not be a problem for a few shots, but venting pressure through that split will build up carbon in the chamber and reliability will suffer.

With the .22LR - or the .22 mag, the straight case is supported at the mouth a little as it is coming out, but the bottleneck of the bottleneck cases are unsupported as soon as it begins to come back. The .22LR doesn't have enough pressure to blow the head off as it begins to extract, but the .17M2 and HMR and the new .17wsm certainly do.

If the extraction is delayed until the pressures are back down to levels that will not split the case - say with a centrefire handgun type of action, there would not be enough energy left to operate the action.

Pump, lever - maybe, or stay with a bolt if it is to be trusted.

From the videos that were put up during ShotShow it seems to work reliably (with the special A17 ammo at least) and accuracy reports are good too.

It has some sort of delayed blowback system to avoid the problems you describe. This delayed blowback is supposed to help with the accuracy too.

I'd love to be wrong - I wonder how they delay it but still have enough power to cycle - must be something ingenious.

My friend has the bolt action, and it is... How do I put this...

It's the ####ing ####!

Seriously. Literally a small calibre sniper rifle. Amazingly accurate... Am a terrible shot and put a round through a bottle cap at 83 yards first try.

Oh and a heads up, CCI and hornady are the brands of ammo you want to buy. Tried Winchester and Remington too, both had many misfires... I can't remember which one it was but out of a box of 50 we had 11 misfire.

So does any of our great Canadian vendors carry these yet?

If yes, let us know who got em or who getting them in soon.

I'd be interested in adding one of these to my collection.
