Went out to the range today to try out the Savage A-22 in 22 win mag. I brought 3 different CCI types of ammo; 40 grain fmj @1875fps, 40 grain game point @1875 fps and 30 grain v-max @ 2200fps. It was a calm overcast morning and after sighting in, I fired a 5 shot group with all three types at 25 meters. The groups were all under 1/2 inch and the gun really threw the brass back. I ended up putting my eye glasses back on as I could feel the blowback on my face and around my right eye. Any left hand shooters using this gun without eye protection will probably regret it. When I tried the gun out at 100 meters, I shot a 10 shot group with the three types of ammo. All three of the groups were two inches but if one flier from each group was subtracted, they all would have been one and a half inch groups. The gun is very light and I haven't been shooting any rimfire or centerfire rifles over the last two months so my groups could definiately be improved upon as well. I have owned Volquartsen rimfire rifles with both carbon fiber and heavy barrels in both 17 hmr and 22 wmr and used to shoot 25 shot groups at 100 meters with them. The 17 hmr groups were as small as 3/4 of and inch and the 22 wmr groups were as small 1 inch. My A17 will do a ten shot one inch group and 100 meters with the A17 ammo but I haven't been able to acquire any A22 ammo yet to see what it can do. The only thing that I did to any of the Savage guns was to run a bore snake down the barrel before shooting them. I had absolutely no problems with the gun today, no stove piping or fail to feed issues. A couple of days ago, I read an article that if you insert the magazine into the gun when the action is locked open, the magazine locks in place easier. Did that today and found that it works. I am going to get a Boyd stock for each of these guns to add a bit of weight to them and dress them up as well. With the A17 I found that if I used the A17 ammo, it worked great but if I used the other types, the action wouldn't get blown back far enough to catch the rim and feed the next round into the chamber all the time.
