Savage A22 recoil assembly question

My new savage A22 (16 inch barrel) was/is giving me a lot of troubles, mainly ejections issues.
I suspect the recoil assembly might be the culprit.
Can someone who is familiar and has time confirm if the black piece is held by a pin?
On mine this piece is loose.
I tried to show what is happening as best as I could on the pictures bellow.
So far, the only thing that will cycle reliably are thunderbolts.
I tried: CCI sv, CCI blazer, Federal Auto Match, Wildcat and thunderbolts.
If anyone has any idea what is going on that would be greatly appreciated.

I received a answer from SAVAGE and it is normal that there is no pin there. My ejection problem may not be related to the recoil assembly after all. I could either order a new recoil assembly (part #111243 if anyone is wondering) or follow their suggestion to send the rifle to Lakefiled for an inspection.

Does the spring stay on the guide when out of the rifle? I sold my A22 but have a pic of that assy. and your Pic #1 doesn't look right. the gray end shouldn't be sticking out like that if the black tab is in the receiver. Maybe your 'other end' is missing the retaining lock thing?

I had the same problem and after filming it in slow motion, I could see the empties stay in the chamber after coming out of the breech. The bolt would pick up a new round and slam the whole mess forward.

Savage sent a new extractor and I found a stiffer extrator spring for it in my junk box. It's has been pretty reliable since the repairs.

Lots of savage owners 'double-up' on those C-springs to cure extraction/ejection. And 'sharpening' the extractor tip helps. Also, mine had a scope that kept bouncing the empties back down.
Good luck, Lucky

My A22 has be flawless for thousands of rounds. Had it out yesterday and will be cleaning tonight. Let me know what kinda pics you want. I find it’s every bit as reliable as my 10/22 and a lot more accurate as well as easier to clean. The Ruger Advantage is after market support and familiarity/popularity.

And there’s no c-springs on the A22. It’s a squared of bolt not like the b22 and Markii

Your recoil spring assembly is broken. You are lucky that the rear dust cover did not break as well. Contact Savage and they will send you a new recoil spring assembly.

Thanks a lot for the pic, I had manually pulled out the gray part to try to show that it was loose when I was firing. I thought that because of this, the bolt was not coming back with enough force to properly eject the empty cartridge but I think I was wrong.

This is exactly what is happening. Exact same problem. Sometimes I have to pry out the stuck empty casing with a knife or something. It looks like the extractor and/or spring is the problem then. It Makes more sense than my original guess now that you mention it. I'll re-contact Savage to get the extractor part # this time.
Meanwhile I'll try to get the extractor spring out to measure it and try to find a stiffer one online.

I'm not to sure what a C-Spring is but I will definitely investigate my extractor spring and try to find a stiffer one. Carefully sharpening the extractor tip also seems like a good idea!

Yea I also really appreciate the ease of field stripping it down quickly but I have to admit I'm not a fan of the cheap plastic back cover lol. I got several great tips in the thread, I think I'm good for the pics for now. I will try replacing the spring and maybe the extractor to see if that will help.

Thanks a lot for your advices guys! I'll keep you posted and maybe the thread can help those who have a similar malfunction in the future.

I read your post right after typing I am confused now lol.
edit : the rear cover did break at one point. I had to repair it with epoxy. At the time I was surprised but I thought I might have made a mistake reassembling too quickly ...

Deffinetly seems something wrong with you recoils spring. Mine the hook piece is fixed in position.

Thanks for the pictures and for letting me know man, I'll try to order a new one from westerngunparts, see if they can get it. I really don't feel like sending my rifle to Lakefield like the person I contacted at Savage suggested I do.

If I were you I’d email savage and tell them it’s broken. When I had a MKii I reported my extractor failure and the only question they asked was my address before sending out the parts free. Awesome to deal with.

The person I spoke to seemed pretty strict that I ship the rifle at my expense to Lakefield so they can inspect & fix if needed ... , I could try to ask again if it is possible to have the part. I think I thought of a way to test if this wiggle in the recoil assembly is responsible for my malfunctions. As soon as I have an opportunity to go to the range I'll try to test that. I'll probably try a stiffer spring under the extractor as well as it doesn't cost much to test. Westerngunparts were really quick to answer and they do have the recoil assembly in stock but it's quite expensive relative to the cost of the rifle so Ill think about it for a few days, probably keep this option as a last resort. I'll keep you posted.
